I have been placed in a high risk group for Downs Syndrome, my ratio is 1:118. I just cant believe it, i was 1: 11,000 for DS. I dont know what to do, im so upset. I am going to speak to the doctor about further testing etc.
has anyone else out there been high risk and gone on to have a healthy baby? I would love to hear. I just feel so awful!
sorry about your news, a further test should give you a more definitive result but does have risk of miscarriage. speak to your dr about your options..
Dee - So sorry that you have had this worrying news. I personally have not had this experience but I know that there are few ladies in BB who have and I am sure they will pop into help you soon. Where your results from a scan and bt? I have heard that the scan result alone is not conclusive. Sorry i could not be much help atm, but just know that you are not alone.
thanks guys, yes the results came from the scan and BT. I cant believe it has happened. I have to wait until monday to see the doctor and i know that there are some risks involved with the testing. I just wish this was a bad dream, i dont feel like its really happening.
Dee, hugs to you. It must be very worrying. I am not trying to diminish your feelings at all, but it might help you to think of the fact that the odds are "only" 1 in 118 that there is a problem. Or put another way, there is a 117/118 chance that the baby is just fine. Unfortunately this still leaves you with the difficult decision of whether or not to pursue other tests, and I hope you get some great advice about this from those that have been there. But in the meantime, please try to remember that things are probably ok and try not to worry too much (I know that's easier said than done). Hugs to you, my thoughts and prayers are with you.
Dee, I had very similar results/ratios when I was pg with Charlie. You poor love. I have been in the place you are in now, and it is awful.
I ended up having further testing (an amniocentisis) and thankfully the amnio told us that he was PERFECT, with no downs syndrome. He is a now gorgeous healthy 2 year old little boy, who just rocks my world.
Please feel free to ask me any questions at all babe. I wish I could make all the doubt and confusion just disappear for you.
You have 2 options for further testing....a CVS (which would be done right now) or wait until around 19 weeks for an amniocentisis. There are pros and cons for both. Please ask me anything you want, or email me if you prefer. lucy.mulvany@bellybelly.com.au

Hi Dee and big ((hugs)) to you. When I had the NT test, our results came back at 1:41 and it was such a shock as suddenly I was confronted with the possibility of having a Downs baby. I did a fair bit of reading about both Downs and the other chromosomal abnormalities that can be detected by further testing (CVS or amnio) and we decided to proceed with a CVS, despite the small risk of miscarriage. Both DH and I felt we would prefer to arm ourselves with information rather than stressing for the rest of the PG, and having the test was the best way to do this. Before they did the CVS we had an appt with a genetic counsellor who was fantastic, explained absolutely everything and provided ongoing phone support etc over the following few days. Turns out our results were completely normal, and all our U/S etc since then have confirmed this. I'm now 35 weeks and everything is going well.
It's important to remember that the NT test is only a screening tool and the vast huge majority of ppl who return a higher risk result go on to have healthy chromosomally normal babies. xxx
Hi Dee - Just wanted to say I hope that all turns out fine for you; remember there is still only a tiny chance anything would be wrong. I have known a couple of people who were told their risk of DS was elevated (one opted to have amnio so as not to have to wonder, the other didn't have amnio as she felt the statistics were enough in her favour not to worry), and in both cases their babies have been born and there is absolutely nothing wrong with them.
Not trying to trivialise your worries, but hoping to convey to you hope, and wishing that all works out well.
I thought I'd pop in and tell you about my friend Joy. Her Uncle has downs and her DH's brother also has downs. During her pregnancy, she was given a 1 in 4 chance of having a baby with downs. She proceeded anyway and gave birth to a beautiful little boy, who is perfect in every way. No downs, no abnormalities. So try to take heart in that. :hugs:

Dee, you poor thing! The most important thing to do is stay positive. The girl that replaced me while I was on maternity leave told me she was pregnant when I returned. She had her u/s and the babies nuchal fold was way bigger than it should be and her OB told her to expect the worst. She went and had her amnio a few weeks ago and no abnormalities detected in any of the chromosomes they test. The OB couldn't explain the nuchal fold reading. I will have all my fingers and toes crossed for you that everything turns out fine.
My GF was told she had a 1:42 chance of Downs Syndrome with her #1. After a lot of agonising they decided to decline testing since she couldn't face ending the pregnancy (that is a VERY personal and individual thing, but she just knew in advance, which many of us wouldn't, that she couldn't do it no matter what) so they carried on with the PG. She was given extra scans to check for heart abnormalities etc. (so if bubs needed surgery at birth she'd be in a good hospital for that) and all seemed well. Her DS was born whole and healthy and did not have downs syndrome. As her Ob pointed out when she declined the tests, 41 of the babies with that score will be fine. It's so hard just now hun. Hi Dee, you must be all over the place at the moment. just wanted to let you know the same thing happened to a friend of mine. told she had a very high risk for downs syndrome after the scan/bloods. a few weeks of agonising over whether to have an amnio. she eventually had one and everything is absolutely fine with her little bubba - the amnio gave them the all clear. the same thing happened to another friend of mine about 6 years ago when she had her little boy and he is just fine too. just wanted to let you know in the hope it might provide some reassurance to you.

when I was pregnant with my eldest son they told me that he definately had downs syndrome and I should abort him immediately. I felt in my heart that he was fine and when he was born I was right.
he is now a very healthy 4 year old with no sign of downs, tests can be wrong and I am glad I listened to my instinct.
