So I know date and technically don't need a dating scan, so my option is to pay for one privately ($240 with not much back from Medicare).
I may not have my first antenatal appt til 18 weeks (hospital very busy). Maybe I sound crazy but I'm worried about telling people I'm pregnant without any proof that there is a baby!
I wouldn't, but then I would stay away from hospitals anyway. They're no place for the healthy.
Also, if you have a positive pregnancy test, I don't understand why you would worry that you're not pregnant? If you want to tell people as soon as possible, do it.
Sorry, to clarify TFB - it's done at a private clinic, but take your point about hospitals! It's more that I worry about something going wrong and not knowing (eg missed miscarriage).
Olive I don't think I get a 12w scan? Is that the NT scan? If so I asked hospital about that and it's done privately too as it's optional...
Check with your GP or whoever you're using through the pregnancy. I had scans at 12, 20 and 32 weeks (plus a few extras due to issues). Thought those three were standard across the board (unless you opt out). And I was private. I had dating scans for each pregnancy at a private clinic but they decided to bulk bill the fee so maybe check what the policy is at the clinic or ring around. Good luck!
I had dating scans both times, as my cycle is pretty random, and we wanted to have a clearer idea of how far along I was, and we'd decided not to have the NT scan.
One time the Dr arranged for it to be bulk billed, the other time we were out of pocket maybe $80.
Mine have been bulk billed every time. **In my experience** Early scans can be for dating/viability. Ive had them for both and always bulk billed. NT scans can be bulk billed but it depends on a number of factors ie age. I had mine done at the maternity hospital at no cost to me.
It can also depend on where you go. Some places bulk bill others wont. Its just a matter of ringing around when you are booking and finding someone who will. The bulk billing places tend to be the more basic places but if you want it mainly to know that bub is there tucked up safe inside then thier services should be sufficient.
I'm surprised they are charging you for the 9 week scan? I thought public did that anyways. I have always wanted one because I don't opt for the 12 week NT scan. My sister in law had a positive test, thought she was pregnant but then at the 9 weeks scan found she had a blighted ovum. Pregnancy test isn't always completely accurate.
I have always done my scans privately though and Medicare does cover some. My ob does his own at 9 weeks though..
Also at the dating scan they can confirm dates. My dates always moved from the dating scan.
Plus I loved seeing that little person and the heart beating. Cemented it all for us otherwise it was just some marks on a stick lol!
