Progesterone Pessaries - confused as to when to begin stopping
I am 8.5 weeks pregnant and the nurses at my FC have advised me to start weening off my pessaries - currently 200mg once a day. They have said I should start having 1 every second night for a week, then 1 every 3 days until run out.
I have a history of problems so thought I would be on these until at least 12 weeks. Am very confused as some nurses tell you different things to others.
I am on 2 x 400mg a day, one morning and one at night. I started on them 2 weeks ago and my ob. said for me to stay on them until I'm 12 weeks which is 3w2d away. That's when the placenta has properly kicked in and taken over. I was put on them because my levels went from 56 to 49 and then down to 29, my ob. said it could be normal and my pregnancy may hold without the extra progesterone but he said he'd rather not risk it and put me on the pessaries. He hasn't done any further monitoring to see what levels are doing now.
I wouldn't think its a good idea for you to go off them just yet, especially if you have had progesterone problems in the past. Can you speak to someone else or maybe if you have enough repeat prescriptions, just continue taking them as normal?
I was on them til 8 weeks with dd2 and 10 weeks with this pregnancy. Once the placenta takes over at 8 weeks you are generally fine. Tell your health care pro if you are worried, I spoke to mine who was willing to let me keep going but I felt it was fine.
My friend was on them to 30ish weeks as she had had a 30 week baby previously.
Everyone and every pregnancy is different .
Thanks everyone for your replies (sorry have been off with all day sickness)....
I finally sorted this out with the nurses and my GP after I had also had a small amount of spotting once I started weaning off. They confirmed yes I could definitely start coming off them so I am now only having 1 every 3 days until they run out so really I will be stopping at about 11-12 weeks. I have also been having weekly scans to monitor things which have really helped keep me sane.
