Hi All,

If the amnio is done is will take 12 days before we get a result (which falls exactly on 22nd dec - my beautiful son's 2nd birthday).
Once we get the results it will decide what happens next, if its a chromosonal problem, some sort of syndrome that is well know about or worse case something dr's haven't seen or heard of before.

If you have an amnio, you can ask for a FISH test that will give you some results within 2 days. The FISH test uses markers on certain chromosomes (13, 18, 21, X and Y). Usually, there are 2 chromosomes of each number and either XX for girl or XY for a boy. If they see 3 markers for one of the chromosomes, this can indicate a possible variation.

They will still do the rest of the testing to confirm any results from the FISH, and the longer testing also looks at other chromosomes.

With amnio, you can find out the sex of your baby. If you dont want to know, you dont have to get this information.

If you are having any trouble getting info from your doctors, or understanding it, or just want someone to talk through your options with, you can request to see a genetic counsellor. They can help even if a genetic condition is not diagnosed.
