Surgery and GA during 1st Trimester

    Hi all,

I'm not pregnant but actively TTC. I also have a specialist appt today with an upper GI surgeon to discuss possibly removing my gall bladder in the next month or so.

If I fall PG this month then should I postpone the surgery until after the baby is born?

In the event that I don't fall PG this month then I will go ahead and have surgery but I don't want to not book it just in case, the gall bladder pain is excruciating at times and can be exacerbated in pregnancy.

Anyone had a General Anaesthetic in their First Trimester? Do doctors generally just try and avoid surgery during this time because of effects to the foetus during its organ development stage?? I've read that the placenta doesn't normally take over for a few weeks after impantation and before then the emby gets its nourisment from it's yolk sac, but I don't want to take any chances..

Thanks for your feedback and advice

It depends on the urgency of the surgery, the type of surgery, the surgeon and a few other factors. I have had several women come in throughout their first trimester. I vaguely recall a pregnant woman having gall bladder out but can't remember if she was late 1st tri or early 2nd. I'd book and then let the team know if you get a BFP and see what they want to do.

    Good luck!

    Thanks MG!

I've booked for 29th August and if I have a BFP before then, I'll put the surgery on hold.

Adding to my family is more important than having the surgery. It's not urgent
