What should be seen at 5 weeks gestation on U/S?

Hi, just wanted to know what is "normal" to be seen at about 5 weeks gestation on an external ultra sound?

Basically i had a dating scan, and i just read the report and all there is is a gestaional sac, no yolk, no pole nothing. The sac put me at 5 weeks 2 days. which i dont know if I would have been that or a little earlier as i dont know exact date of ovulation....

Does this sound like a blighted ovum? Should i still keep faith, please help me, i cant stop crying and i am just devastated.

Oh Blakesmommy, please don't cry. It is way too early to see anything yet. At this stage it is quite normal for only the sac to be visible. Please hold on to your faith and I wish you all the very best.

I wouldn't worry just yet. Wayyy too early for worrying.. even too early for a heartbeat. I'm sure everything is fine. Even that there is a sac there is something to be excited about!!!! ie. better than not having one :-) Cheer up!!!!

Blakesmummy... I think you had an u/s waaaaaaaaaay to early! :hugs: Plus it was external... I didn't think an external ultrasound would show up with much before 7-8 weeks...? Has your dr scheduled another u/s?

the only eason i wanted an u/s was because of the pain i was having, i was panicing that it was ectopic. well at least i can now rule that one out.
I wasnt expecting to see much, but was told that there should have been more in there then just the gestational sac. Hence why i am soooo confused.

Blakesmummy - I had my first scan (an external one too) right on 5 weeks because we thought it would be ectopic. They told me I wouldn't see much and only look for where the sac is located (ie if it's in the tubes or in the uterus).

All I saw was the gestational sac in my uterus and that was it, no yolk, no pole, nothing else. So, try not to worry too much about it!

I had a follow up scan at 8 weeks where I could see a blob and hear a heartbeat.

PS. I always sneak a peak at the reports too, can't resist

That's pretty much what you'd expect to see at 5w2d with an abdominal scan - don't stress, it's far too early for that :hugs:

Hi Blakesmummy congrats on your pregnancy
I had an ultra sound at the exactly 5 weeks 2 days and all they saw was the sac so They also did an internal scan and saw a tiny yolk sac but you can't see the sac on the external scan. I wouldn't be upset it's still to early I was told too early to say yes or no to being a viable pregnancy but exactly four weeks later it's still hanging on

Blakesmummy Please don't cry, its still very early. The other girls have said they had a scan around the same time as you did & saw the same as you did... they went on to have healthy PG.

Try to think about the positive... there WAS a sack!

I'd suggest you try to book another u/s for a few weeks time & if you're not happy with what you see then, maybe ask for an internal. I recently had an internal u/s at 6 1/2 weeks. They couldn't see much externally so they went internal.

Please try to stay positive... big hugs!

I'd say not until 7-8 weeks... I had an internal at 7 weeks and saw the little blob with heartbeat and all that (pic in my gallery). My FS only did it that soon because of Christmas, he wouldn't have done it any sooner he said.

Hi just seen my FS today and am booked in for day 42 which is 6 weeks, he says that is the soonest you can be sure you will see the heartbeat. Good luck but as the other girls have said just a bit tooo early, if you could wait a bit longer it makes it easier to get to the critical 12 week scan, not sooooo many long weeks in between????

I had a scan at almost 7 weeks and it showed that i was 6+1. All i saw was a sack, no heart beat no nothing! I read the report (yep im another one who cant wait). I am now 14+5 and bubba is kicking the doppler now!
Please dont stress, If you want to get another scan, But i would wait till 12week NT scan.
