I am oly between 5 and 6 weeks pregnant, but we had planned a ski trip for next week. Some people have told me I should not go skiing. What do you think?
TIA
yeah i probably wouldnt either, also because i have never skied before. i am gonna give up my weights and aerobics class for 12 weeks too just to be on the safe side.
Even though you probably don't have a tummy yet hun I still wouldn't risk it and this is coming from a ski freak..... I love it so much but it really isn't worth taking a massive stack and then worrying about it... I'm not the worlds best or fastest skier but just the thought of some of the stacks I have had make me cringe! Maybe you could still go if you are going with friends, and spend the time relaxing and spend your lift pass money on massages and yummy hot chocolates!
i would go. I am a confident skiier and would just take it easy. I was surfing up until about 15 weeks with my DD. Ob said it was fine and i have worse stacks in the water than on the snow. From memory, he said it was fine to do anything i normally do, but don't do anything that my body is not used to...... hope that makes sense!
I guess i depends on how confident and comfortable you feel about it.
If i had a protruding belly, i would think twice about it, but at 5 or 6 weeks you litttl bean is well padded.
Bub would be well protected for sure but I would still be worried about breaking something else or needing surgery etc! not worth the risk plus strenuous exercise is not recommended in the first trimester JMHO.
IMO I wouldn't be skiing either, as I too have taken quite a few nasty spills. I don't think it matters how confident you are or how long you have been skiing for there is always a risk involved that you could take a tumble and injure yourself and your bubba. I agree with Tan and would still go but spoil myself with yummy food and have some pampering done
I am a confident balck run snowboarder and I wouldn't be going to be honest. Too many people out there who can't ski or board properly and are likely to take you out! As Tan said, even though bubs would be protected pretty well the risk of other injury that could require surgery is fairly high.
It is considered strenous exercise and a high risk activity that isn't recommended during pregnancy however, I would confirm with your OB or GP and if they give you the go-ahead then it is really up to you.
I would go. Though I'd be inclined not to take any silly risks due to the little traveller. Maybe steer clear of the black diamonds and just enjoy a leisurely ski on the easier slopes
Just be careful as you'd probably fatigue a lot easier then when you're not PG. I haven't been skiing when PG (due to financial reasons more than anything) but I did notice when I was doing my regular pilates or when I went to gym I had to cut it back a bit as my muscles got sore quite quickly.
Thanks for the advice. I am pretty confident on the runs. I am meant to be skiing with a friend who hasn't been for a few years, so it would probably be blue runs. I was thinking of maybe doing a half day, and then go build a snowman with DS. I will talk to my Ob/Gyn today.
you sound like a confident skier - so go with what you feel is best - I certainly would not call downhill skiing strenous exercise - particularly if you are experienced.
I plan to go cross country skiing in September - I will be about 5 months by then. I am not a confident downhill skier, so falling or colliding with others is very likely. But I am very fit and find cross country skiing like going for my usual training runs. In any case, it is about reducing the risk of falling hard or colliding with others.
Just wanted to quickly post to let you all know that I did ski. It was good, but quite tiring. I only skiid for the afternoon, and that was enough for me. Didn't do anything too daring. Nearly got run into by a beginner, but I am experienced enough to avoid a disaster. Thanks everyone for you thoughts on the subject.
