    Sore nipples?

    Hi all,

Im not overly fussed that it's a problem, more that I'm curious to know what it is, and what may help relieve the discomfort?

I'm 31 weeks, and in the past week or so, I've started having very sore nipples on and off. I used to get it, and noticed they were erect, but they're not now? The discomfort is just there.

It's hard to describe the pain now that I don't have it currently (always the way!) I guess the best way I could describe it ATM, is that it sorta feels like someones pinching them? Not overly, just to the point of discomfort.

If it helps, im not leaking colostrum, but I definitely do have it, and have since about 17 weeks or so?

Any ideas and experiences would be great!

    Thanks ladies

I think it's normal and it's just your hormones getting things ready for baby. My nipples have started to be sore on and off lately too. I put it down to my body getting ready for baby!

I think it is just one of the many weird & wonderful things that happen in preparation for birth & feeding our babies.

I have been having it too. My boobs & nipples have their moments of soreness & sensitivity.

I know the medical reason for this thanks to my recent BF class.
In our boobs we have alveoli kinda like in our lungs except they produce milk n colostrum... We don't have them until we get pg and the hormones activate their growth... Te alveoli go down into stores or reservoirs which lie behind the areola (the whole nipple not just the pointy bit)... The nipples Hurt because of the hormones and because of the stores stretching, growing and filling with colostrum/milk...

Also there are (i think?) around 27 milk ducts in the breast. Each pregnancy uses about 9 ducts, so it's the pathways all getting sorted out

I wore a sports bra to avoid any movement (without it being too tight) and because you can get really soft material ones that are nicer on sore boobs. I found the more my boobs moved, the more they seemed to hurt or maybe it was just because they were so tender

HTH, not looking forward to that bit!
