WDYT A glass of wine while pregnant?

I am just curious to what peoples opinions are because I have really been feeling like the occasional glass of red wine lately. I haven't had ANY alcohol at all, but it's my 30th coming up and I was thinking of having a nice glass of shiraz. I know some people say no alcohol at all while pregnant and some people say it's ok. When I was pregnant with the twins I had half white wine half orange juice on 3 separate occasions but that was it. So what do you think? This thread is to get opinions only on what you think or what you did, not judging me if I decide to have a wine (and it would only be 1!)

Fetal alcohol syndrome can apparently be caused by even a little alcohol... I have never had even one sip whilst pregnant... But im also paranoid something would go wrong...

my mum im sure had a few wines back in the day with us, three children ... and we are all ok.... So I guess you do what feels right to you ?????

I think that if it's 1 it's fine, I know plenty that have drunk while pregnant, not to the point they were staggering lol..
But one I did know use to drink beer all the time, thank god her babies were all healthy!!
I've heard, not sure were so don't take it as a fact, but apparently wine is the safest alcoholic drink whilst pregnant??

I think it depends on what stage of pregnancy & how much. Early on, first tri, I would avoid it; I think one drink later would be ok?
Having said that I got married at 10 weeks & had a small glass (actually it was a wine cooler thing); I checked with my doctor & she was fine with it.
The whole thing about avoiding it altogether is because they don't know how much is ok; so it's safer (and easier) to just say 'none at all'.
I guess you will get a lot of different opinions.... My mother was advised by her doctor, late in her pregnancy that a glass of wine would be a good thing if it relaxed her (that was in the 70's, FWIW)

I had half a glass of champers at xmas after a full meal and it was sipped over an hour (warm and flat ) It's your personal choice hun. A 30th is a very special occasion. After a full meal and if it's sipped I think it'd be okay.

I had a couple (only one at a time) while I was pregnant with both girls. It's personal opinion the facts are out there about drinking alcohol and pregnancy/breastfeeding it's up to you how you perceive them.

With DD1 I couldn't drink any wine at all - I loved sniffing it but it was like acid if I put it in my mouth. However, I craved Guinness. My OB said I could have one a week and that should help with the craving but not do any damage. DD1 is a bright normal child.

With DD2 I didn't want beer but did want the occasional glass of wine which I also had. I agree with MN - read the studies and determine what course of action you will take. It's up to you to weigh up the risks and what you are prepared to do with your child. FWIW I think driving a car while pregnant carries more risk than one glass of wine but most people wouldn't give it a second thought.

The thing is Mummenurse, I haven't found any hard evidence against the ODD 1 glass.. (I haven't looked that hard though) I am aware of FAS and I wont be having shots thanks Fleur .. Also the thing Fleur mentioned about the 1st trimester I find funny because I didn't find out with the twins I was pregnant til 8wks (not a cycle stalker back then lol) and I was so drunk on my birthday I mean really drunk, and I would have been about 5wks pregnant, a crucial time when everything is developing..

Thanks for your opinions, I thought it would be fairly 50/50

I had one sip of champagne at my wedding when I was pregnant with DD. I was 6 weeks along and hiding it until we announced it was SUPER hard.
I don't think the odd glass of wine would be a problem for me. Whatever you are comfortable with.

I had a glass of Moet on my 30th when I was pregnant with DD. I was more than comfortable with my choice to do so (as was DH) and that's what's important if you choose to have a drink - that you are OK with your decision

I didn't like the smell or taste of wine while PG with DD (champers being the exception) which was so strange for a girl who loves her wine! Red wine smelt and tasted like paint stripper White wasn't much better so it was easy for me to avoid them.

This pregnancy is different though. White wine smells appealing and I've had a couple of tiny sips of red and it tastes normal I'll continue to avoid it though as I'm surprised at how easily I can avoid it (keeping in mind I love my wine normally!) but I'll allow myself to have a small glass at special occasions, like my friend's wedding in September.

Some of my friends current OBs are saying a couple of wines a week is fine, some are saying no alcohol at all. Like a PP said, the lack of knowledge on how much (or how little) alcohol is 'too' much is why the 'rule' tends to be 'no alcohol at all'. But as long as you're comfortable BAL then really that is all that matters.

Guilty of that here... I got blind on my birthday this year.. and i mean blind. 3 days later I found out i was pregnant. In my defence, i took a test the morning of the night of the party.. lol.

I think one glass of wine will be perfectly fine Enjoy!

PS. Ive been hanging for an ice cold beer this whole pregnancy.. im still considering it.

I didn't drink at all during DS's pregnancy, I think I had 1 glass of half champagne and half OJ while pregnant with DD but I doubt I will drink if I get far enough to worry about it with a 3rd.

After 8 m/c's and 4 yrs TTC I just couldn't risk it, I just wouldn't feel comfortable. But thats me.

I absolutely craved a glass of wine during my pregnancy with the girls - which is really strange because I don't normally drink much at all and normally not wine . My treat to myself was a glass of wine on Christmas day with my sisters and it was AWESOME! I copped some dirty looks off my cousin who clearly didn't approve but I was comfortable with it.

I was blind drunk before I found out I was pregnant with DS. Didn't drink any more once I found out.

Dd1 was overdue and my ob suggested I have a drink of wine to help relax, so I did. Didn't do any harm to her - nor did it make her come out lol

Dd2 and dd3 - had a couple of wines throughout my pregnancies, never more than one at a time and probably only every few months

The only alcohol I had with DS1 was a sip or 2 of DH's beer occassionally - cause i really, really wanted beer - but was just so scared of it doing any damage so didn't do anymore then that.

But with DS2 I was alot more relaxed. I had a few glasses of champagne at different special occassions throughout my pregnancy and the occassional west coast cooler when i wanted it (they are usually my summer refreshing drink anyway). I have no problem with it and I think my boys have turned out ok.

I say do what makes you comfortable - there will be no judgement from me on the night.
