Cesarean and Private Health and Medicare

Does anyone know what costs are involved with having a c-section and if private health insurance or medicare cover any of it? Thanks

Cesarean and Private Health and Medicare

I had an emergency c sect at a private hospital after hours. The ob and hospital fees were covered by phi and medicare but I had to pay an extra fee for the anestheatist and for the pediatrician who was there to assist as it was midnight.

I think it will vary on the OB and hospital, plus anaethetist and paed. Our OB was no gap, so he just charged whatever our PHI paid out. I can't remember what our anaethetist's bill was? Could have been around the $600-$800 mark? Paed was just over $1000, which was 3 or 4 visits in hospital, plus a visit after the first week, and the fee for another paed to attend DS's birth as our paed wasn't even in the state. Our PHI paid for our hospital and theatre, we have no excess on hospital stays, and our hospital bill came to about $5000 for the 5 days/ 4 nights i was there.
It will differ on what insurance cover you have and the doctors and hospital. Best to get in contact with your health insurer and ask if they have a contract with certain dr's and or hospitals in your area.
