    Coffee while pregnant

I am 20 weeks pregnant and still feeling rather tired and have no energy or motivation to do anything. (I wish nesting started earlier!) I have discovered that one coffee gives me a lot of energy and I can wiz around cleaning for the next couple hrs... I have only been having 1-2 a week cos I feel guilty but im just wondering is one a day or one every couple days really that bad for my baby?? I am just having a plain old nescafe with one smallish tsp of coffee. I know coffee isnt good for u in general so I definitely wont be making it a habit.. especially once my baby is here and im breastfeeding. But wld love to hear if others have had a guiltfree cup a day while pregnant? Thanks!

I think baby gets more coffee when you are pregnant, than breastfeeding. many people breastfeed and drink coffee. the cool thing is you can see any effects it has on baby. some babies won't be affected, and others will.

I can't stand smell of coffee, especially when pregnant, but wouldn't feel guilty about having one.

I think this is one of those each to their own thing, I don't think there is definitive research showing it is bad or good or whatever. I abstained for the first trimester while things were forming, then allowed myself one a day from then on.

    Re: Coffee while pregnant

If you just have instant coffee then it's not as bad as strong, brewed coffee or espresso etc. With my last pg I craved coffee - I was drinking a dare espresso iced coffee every day and having 1-2 cups of instant coffee a day. I only like weak coffee though - I was after the taste of it more than anything and most of the time I made decaf at home anyway. I think what you're having would be fine and I would drink it guilt free. my DS had no adverse affects from the coffee I drank during pg either - he was a large, robust baby when he was born and there were no problems with him or anything.

If you want it, have it. You and the baby will be fine

    Re: Coffee while pregnant

I didn't drink coffee until after ds1 was born and sleep deprivation set in, I continued to have one a day during my pregnancy with ds2 and with this pregnancy I can't stand the thought of hot drinks but have been making my own iced coffees each morning. I prefer to make it myself so I can only put in a little bit of coffee and no sugar. I find if I have a store bought one it sends bub crazy, which I assume is all the sugar, but she's doing fine in there and I'm able to function so it's a win win

    Re: Coffee while pregnant

I had no interest in coffee til I was pregnant with DD1. Then I went back to my milo til I was pregnant with DD2. It wasn't til after DS came along though, that I became a real coffee drinker & I could have 4 or 5 cups of instant coffee some days. Even when pregnant with DD3.

Coffee/caffeine isn't all bad. It has its bonus's

I have two cups of tea a day and that is full of caffeine. If I don't I seriously flag. I would drink one coffee a day happily if I didn't love tea so much!!

    Re: Coffee while pregnant

I drank a (real) coffee every day with DD1 and DD2 and they are fine. I was working almost full time with both pregnancies and I seriously could not have functioned without my morning coffee.

I have a large coffee a day! So about two shots in a takeaway cup. I did the same with DD.

    Re: Coffee while pregnant

I've always felt comfortable with having up to one coffee or caffeinated soft drink a day while pregnant. But there are some nice decaf versions around too. I've never got a real buzz from coffee so I enjoy the decaf almost as much

I had 1 a day with DS and have done same with this one. Working full time with a toddler requires such things to happen

Looking at the numbers, 3-4 proper coffees is the caffeine limit. I had more coffee with Liebs than I'm having atm, but hooked on hot fruit juice now.
