Hi Ladies,
This could be a stupid question....
I am 5 weeks pregnant and a bit of a worrier as I only just gave up smoking 1 month ago- anyhoo, is your first u/sound always at 12 weeks? Do I have an option to request an earlier u/sound? Even if I pay out of my own pocket? I would like to have one at six weeks if I could....
Thanks!
I had a scan at about 7 or 8 weeks 'cause the GP wasn't sure of my dates. It was covered by Medicare. I think 7 weeks is the earliest you can see a heartbeat.
Congrats on the pregnancy & on quitting smoking Emma09!
I had a scan at 6 weeks and saw the baby's heart beat. Most scans performed in early pregnancy are either because the pregnancy is high risk, or just to confirm dates (dating scan) -
You can request a dating scan too if you want. Beofre 6 weeks it is unlikely that you will see a heartbeat so if you are going to have one 7 weeks or more is the best time. If you are a public patient it will be covered by medicare too.
If you're not 100% on your dates, usually the Dr will request a dating scan. Each time my scans have been requested because I am unsure of dates, it has been covered by Medicare.
Congrats on your baby and for giving up smoking. Wishing you all the best
i had 2 x scans in first tri with DD#3 thru medicare, and 1 x in 2nd trimester. Medicare will only allow 1 scan per trimester - i.e 11-12 wk scan and 18-19wks scan.....i had to pay for one of them, cant remember which one, they sent me a bill in the mail....i didnt have to pay at the time of the ultrasound....
No such thing as a stupid question!! no-one knows everything!
i had a 'dating' scan at 6w 5d with dd.. it was all covered by medicare.
with dd2, i went for my 12 week scan (the first scan of this pg) but was only 10w, so they bulk-billed me as a dating scan, and i went back in 2 weeks (and paid $110, $60 back from medicare)
