On a thread on here recently about safe and unsafe foods some very helpful person posted a link to the NSW health authority booklet on pregnancy and food. The info is great - I have printed it a posted it on my fridge as it's clear and thorough. Largely I was aware of the major do's and don'ts but one bit really surprised me: it says DON"T EAT alfalfa sprouts, broccoli sprouts, onion sprouts... and lists about 5 other types of sprouts. REALLY? WHY? I thought sprouts were really good for you and have never heard this warning before. Unfortunately it doesn't offer an explanation. I've eaten sprouts twice that I can think of during this preg but am choosing not to freak myself out about it. Just want to know why the serious warning. Any thoughts?
I think it has to do with the fact that they are served damp IYKWIM? And the plastic trays that they come in breed bacteriea too. I think its cause they are so hard to wash. They are sort of grown in bacteria like conditions (I think........)
Dont worry, I have accidently eaten heaps of "banned" foods. not to mention all the grog I drank before i found out I was UTD
Shell xx
Yeah I think even when you are not preg you need to be careful with them as they can go off very quickly. I still use been sprouts in my cooking but try to use them the day I buy them and I figure that they are being cooked too so they can't be too bad. (I hope)
OMG never heard that one and i normally buy them every week, i do throw them out after they have been opened for more than say three or four days.
You also need to remember that any food is ok as long as you can heat it past that point, obviously there are some exceptions but listeria is killed off by heating.
