    Eating nuts

Just had a quick worry this morning!

DH is allergic to nuts but I love them, especially peanuts. So on weekdays when he's at work (he leaves the house an hour before I do) I tend to eat a bowl of honey nut cornflakes, which contain peanuts. They're yum! I have maybe 40-50g (30g is tiny!) and semi-skimmed milk. The cereal is fortified with vitamins and folic acid, so I just looked at the fortified thing.

Then I recalled that although I love peanuts and have no allergies (I've been eating them ever since I could grab them - my parents used to leave a bowl of peanuts out a lot), DH has a severe nut allergy and MiL blames her eating nuts when pg. Now, clearly I'll be blaming DH if our baby has this problem LOL (he has so many allergies!) but want to minimise the risk - should I just eat something else? I can eat toast for the next few days and change cereal at the weekend, but I'll miss my nutty cereal!

So, should I stop eating nuts?

    Thanks!

Yes you should stop eating nuts.I remember reading somewhere that anyone with family history of nut allergies to avoid in pregnancy.
I loved satay in early pregnancy but the craving has gone now.
Im sure alan the midwife would be the best person to ask.

I dunno how it works...my sister is allergic, but I've been told it's fine for me.

And who knows how she developed the allergy anyway, since my mum's not big on peanuts!

Ask your dr or midwife I reckon

If there is a family history of nut alergy, it is recommended that one avoids peanuts when pregnant....you'll just have to pig out on them when your babies born!

I don't think a little bit of nuts now and again is going to hurt. I used to eat two king size snickers bars a week or even a couple of times a week when i was pregnant with Alex.

I think it's only if you eat too much of it and every day. I thought there was some nuts you are allowed to eat can't remmeber which ones.

Ryn if your really worried talk to your Dr about it and see what they say.

I know how you feel Ryn - I love peanuts and my close friend at work has become what I affectionatly call the nut nazi (or pregnancy nazi depending on what he's telling me off for). He watches everything I eat like a hawk and won't let me eat peanuts. I have no FH of allergies but have heard that eating peanuts in pregnancy can make the baby susceptible to a peanut allergy. Not sure how that works when so many generations of women ate them and their babies didn't become allergic! I'd suggest talking to your doc/midwife and following their advice.

    P.S. I want peanuts now!

*sigh* I was told nuts are fine, but peanuts are out. I love peanuts! I want DH to have the baby; he can't have peanuts!

Ah well, I'm sure I can make up for it when the children are older and I sit and scoff a 1kg bag of peanuts while they play.

Unfortunately, yes it does! I love peanuts too, especially sate dishes, but can't have any of that for a while!

I read somwhere that if you suffer from hayfever, allergies or eczema - type conditions, you are at higher risk of passing on a peanut allergy to your child if you eat peanuts or anything with peanuts in it.

I read somewhere that if you eat lots of peanuts while pregnant, especially early on, it can increase the chances of baby having a bad allergy to peanuts. I dont know how accurate that is though, as it seems some people have been told its OK to eat peanuts.

Actually, I was thinking about this today because I wanted to eat satay for dinner.

I was told that you should avoid nuts after 20 weeks. Before then, it is ok to have them now and again... not everyday though. I'm not sure about peanut butter though... I am sure it would be similar, to avoid after 20 weeks.
I had no idea about anything like this when I was pregnant with James and Madeleine. I ate peanuts with James and I loved peanut butter... he came out fine

Well, I don't know what to make of this but, here's what I've noticed.
DD is anaphylactic with nuts, but the 2 that are the worst for her (can kill her) are pistacchios and cashews. And coincidentally (?) these are the only 2 nuts that DH and I would buy and eat at home, while i was pg (well before then too... but yes, i did eat them during my pregnancy.)
So i don't know, but we just don't have any nuts or anything containing nuts at home now because of DD, so I was a no nut zone during my pregnancy with DS.
Of course DD's allergy specialist who tests her every year, told me to book in to see him as soon as DS was born, so he can test DS as well as having a family member with a severe allergic reaction means it is very likely that he too will have it.

Has that shed any light on anything for anyone?
Basically, I am concerned that maybe she is allergic to the 2 nuts we ate most, because i ate them during the pregnancy (though admitedly, i wasn't living on them per se... )
