GDS glucose challenge- do I have to fast overnight?

    Hey lovely people,

I've got to do my glucose challenge tomorrow but I don't know if I have to fast overnight. The form says GDS- pregnancy load 50mg. Can anyone help me out? MIL seems to think I have to fast from 8 pm tonight and not even have any water, but no water seems a bit extreme to me?

    TIA

    Hi there,

You have to fast for about 10 hours prior. My appointments were always 8am and I couldn't have anything after 10pm. You can drink water but that is it. Don't even drink tea. Hope that helps! Good luck tomorrow! x

I did not have to fast for my test and my form said the same as what you have said. I would have thought they would tell you if you needed to fast.

i think the longer tests (2hrs or so) you may have to fast but can sip water, with the short 1 hour one i did it the same day i saw my ob, i wasnt allowed anything 2 hours prior.

Oh hang on, is it just the GCT or GTT? You don't fast for the GCT which is the initial screening test for GD. Sorry. I thought you were talking about the GTT where you have to be there for 2-3 hours.

The challenge test is non fasting, the GTT (glucose tolerance test) is fasting.

Thanks for the replies, think I'm going to give it a miss for the morning, will do it through the week. I've got the flu really badly so I think the last thing my body needs is for me to deprive it of fluids overnight.

no no no, pregnant women do not fast. Only non preggers people have to fast if they are drinking that stuff. only tip is to not have anything with sugar in it during that time, even be carefull of your cereal, juices etc.
