    Small belly @ 27wks

Just a general question. I was told this morning at my antenatal visit that my belly was a bit small. The Dr measured my fundal height which i know isn't a sure indicator and it was only 25cm, so anyway i am booked in for another scan on the 24th Oct.
My question is what do they do if the baby is on the small side? The Dr just said we will wait for the U/S results and take it from there.
Any past experiences would be great.

    DD1 was born 7lb 5oz & 50cm long.

During my pg with DD2 my fundal height measued smaller & my gp told me my bub would more than likely be smaller than DD1.

    DD2........8lb 9oz & 50cm long!!!

Don't worry too much hun. Its just a guide really.

I had a small belly at around this stage of PG...
At around 37/38w preg, I had a MW appt, and they measured my fundal height, which was the same as the previous measurement about 2 weeks before, so i was told to have a US that day. So i had the US and my bubby was measuring a bit smaller than what was hoped. I was told to come back the next monday so we can talk about induction etc etc. That saturday I went into labour and gave birth on the sunday, so didnt have to have the induction.

I know slightly different to your situation, as they probably wouldnt induce you at this stage if your baby was too small, but they may monitor you for a bit.
It is pretty scary hey, i remember that day and i was scared that something was wrong with my bubby (The MW hadnt explained properly, til after the US, i guess she didnt want me to stress out) but i had the US, then hooked up to a CTG for a hour or so to monitor baby's heartbeat and movement...
Isabell was born 48cm long, and weighing 2.8 kilos..

i was hardly even showing at 27 week with #1 and small with #2.
I would be too worried if you scans are ok.

I am measuring 2 week behind with this pregnancy (was anywhere from 3-4 weeks behind with DD). nothing wrong had all the checks just a little bub (5lb 13)... will see what this one is

    Thanks for all your replys.
I never got my fundal height measured with DS so it is a bit hard to compare pregnancies because of that.

    Hi,
I wouldn't worry too much. I was small with all of my pregnancies and with my last I had a scan at 36wks as my ob thought bub was going to be very small and she actually measured 38wks, so don't stress yourself too much.

    Regards,
    Dianne

A friend of mine who is currently 39weeks is measuring 5 weeks behind - she has been having weekly US for the last month or so however that was something else unrelated to the size - her baby is measuring perfectly on the scans - not huge but not tiny either I think she mentioned to me the other day that baby was already close to 8lbs and with 5cm behind in her fundal height you'd have expected alot smaller - she is pretty small herself too

Mmmm makes you wonder why they take our fundal height, when it is so unpredictable! Anyway i have a three weeks to go before my US and it will be interesting to see what comes out of it anyhow.

technically they arent supposed to do fundal height in the 3rd trimester - it is an old school method of measuring and bub will bend and twist to fit in our bellies any way they can

    good luck with the scan

Thanks PP, that just made me feel so much better! At my 24 wk visit which i was actually 23wks and 3 days i was 23.... spot on i would say!
I just looked in my pregnancy journal book and the stupid DR didn't even write down any of my details for the visit, at least i know everything else was fine because i asked.

Once I get to about 25 weeks I always messure about 3 or 4 cm behind.
    None of my babies have been tiny, 7lb8, 8lb3 & 8lb 4.
this one I am messuring 3 weeks behind but ont he growth scan I had at 32 weeks the baby was off the scale big for most the messurements.
Even the midwife laughed that I messure small but obvisouly have abig bub in there.

Don't take this the wrong way FJ but your belly looks huge compared to mine...yes i know i have a fair few weeks to catch up to you yet.....but your belly looks gorgeous....i am so jealous. I have this tiny compact bump happening, i'm not a big person, size 12 when i fell pregnant and i haven't put on much weight at all either, i think a total of 4-5 kg so far....maybe i just have a good sized cavity or something for my baby to fit into before i start to grow outwards!

Don't worry Danni, both my kids I had a small belly and then towards the end it got big. Remember that bub is aboug 2kg at...whenever, maybe at the start of the 3rd trimester, and so they about double their weight from then til their birth. Plenty of time to pop.

Another thing is, if you're taller, then there's more room upways and not yet the need to stretch outwards. Or bub could just be nestled a bit further back. Or you've got good abdominal muscles. Plenty of reasons you might not have a huge belly yet.

Haha, wise man. All partners of a pregnant woman need to do is keep their mouth shut (apart from genuine compliments) and bring drinks, food and rubs.

Love the pics FJ...totally gorgeous! Looks as though you get bigger each time, the boys you were quite small and then Isla and this one are kinda similar from what i could see. I absolutely love the name Isla, i actually asked DP about that name a couple of month ago but it was a no go with him but who knows, we could be having another boy yet!
Yes Nelle..men are wise when they need to be. DP has been totally great....i love being pregnant and just after the birth as he treats me like a queen!
