Has anyone been told the wrong gender at the 18 wk scan? Was I?

    Hi everyone,

I had my 18 wk scan about 5 weeks ago and I cant stop thinking that I 'MAY' have been told the wrong gender. This is what happened:

The sonographer who performed the scan asked us if we wanted to know the sex of the baby. We excitedly said yes, and were promptly told the baby was a GIRL. I was very happy and surprised, so I asked him a few moments later if he was sure. He said yes, its a girl. Just as he was about to turn off the machine he said, 'ohh, Im sorry...I think its actually a boy', and he showed us what appeared to be a little penis. (Nothing else). The view was straight down the legs (ie from the top looking down on the legs), not underneath as is usually used to determine gender. Therefore I didnt see any other 'boy bits'. He showed us this, and quickly turned off the machine.

About 2 weeks later we showed the picture to my obs, who said that the u/s photos were so unclear, and that the only one which showed underneath between the legs could not be used to determine the gender b/c it was too dark. He guessed that it was a boy because he couldnt see the three lines usually seen for a girl, but that he couldnt see any boy bits either, and that he was only guessing.

So my question is.... is it a boy? Could it have been the cord we saw? I have little faith in the sonographer because he told us a girl initially, then boy. Im pretty sure it is a boy, but Im just curious what people think.

Has anyone been told the wrong gender before?

    None of mine were wrong.
When I had DD1 he wasn't too sure, because she had her legs crossed in front of her, but he couldn't see 'any extra bits hanging out', as he said, so he guessed she was a girl, but couldn't say for sure.

With DD2 we wanted a boy, but he was pretty sure she was a girl. I got him to check twice.

With DS I had the u/s & was told a boy, but she couldn't say 100%. So when I had to have another one coz he was stubborn, The lady who did the 2nd one actually showed me his boy bits. It was the most beautiful pic I'd ever seen!
When I had him I was told there were a few mistakes made with the sex recently.
I've heard that unless they actually see a scrotum they will say its a girl. So its possible it was hiding, then he got a quick view.

Yeah, people are told the wrong gender all the time. I have a friend who is a middy and she says it happens frequently, and I know a few people who have had it happen too. Look on the bright side, at least you know that it might be wrong, rather than finding out at the birth LOL.

I'm sure most people don't think it matters at all, once they've come around to the idea. But what if they've done alot of preparation? That would be a bit annoying.

One BB lady was told the wrong sex, and she found out at another scan days before the birth! She had reasons though for being concerned about what sex she had........I'll let her tell you about it though
