I think it's usually at about week 10 that you can hear the heartbeat so don't be disappointed if your Dr doesn't check for it just yet.

My doctor tried to hear the heartbeat on a doppler at 15 weeks & 5 days and couldn't find it, she said not to worry about it because sometimes they can't get it until 17 weeks. I called her a few days later and asked for a scan because I was worried she couldn't find a heartbeat. She sent me for one, there was my bouncing little bubba with a excellent heartbeat. The ultrasound woman said she probably can't find it because my bubba was very active and kept moving. So it can be a while before they find it, and sometimes the baby doesn't always want to be found .

my midwife said that she wasn't going to even try to hear a heartbeat before 14 weeks. i heard it at 16 weeks using the doppler.

JDsMum - will you have a 12 week scan? at least you'll get to see if, even if you dont hear it.

I had my first appt with obgyn when I was 9 wks, she did a scan and I could see the heartbeat, and every scan after that we could see it and we were told what it was but we didn't actually hear it until our 19wk scan.

It depends. my midwife found it with the doppler at 11 weeks, but the ob registrar at the hospital couldn't find it at my 15 weeks booking in appt, so had to get the portable u/s out and check it that way - amd it was fine.

It can depend on the position of your placenta as well, if its anterior (at the front) sometimes it can take longer for the hb to be audible with a doppler.

I remember my midwife saying 'they' dont like poking around there and even trying to listen for a heartbeat until after 13 weeks....

its a little early. Bub is probley about the size of a grape atm. So they prob wont even check for the simple reason if they cant find it, they dont want to freak u out even tho it will be beating, its just too small to hear.
