Help! How far along am I?

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on my current situation.

According to Fertility Friend and my own calculations, I am 15 weeks pregnant with an EDD of 21 April 2010.

However, I saw my doctor who has said after a dating scan at 8 weeks that I am 13 weeks pregnant with an EDD of 27 April 2010.

I?m a bit puzzled. I understand that she is saying I am 13 weeks pregnant going by the gestational age of the baby, but I thought doctors went by the LMP date because different babies grow at different rates (within reason)? Also, how can there be a two week discrepancy between how far along I am, yet only 1 week?s difference between my EDD?

Not that it really matters per se, but I am confused at to whether I should count myself 13 or 15 weeks? I am dying to find out the baby?s sex and want to know how long I have to wait LOL.

Thanks so much for any comments!

it depends if you are counting from lmp or ovulation day.

the dating scan would be the most accurate and goes on gestational growth. this date is usually taken from date of implantation so can be a week or two from LMP so hence EDD is only a week as your not counting that first week from your period

    Sounds confusung!
As far as I know, your LMP will give you a more accurate date than an u/s, specially after 12 weeks when the baby starts to grow at a different rate to other babies.
Maybe talk to your gp/ob again & ask to have it explained a little better?

With my DD I was due 15/4 going by LMP, but due 21/4 going by ovulation, and due 23/4 going by ultrasound.
If your cycle was longer than the average 28 days, then when you do get pregnant, you will appear to be a lot further along than if your cycles were 28 days. Does that make sense?

Going by ovulation is a lot more accurate than LMP because a woman nearly always ovulates between 10-18 days (I think it is) before her next period is due.
Dating scans, eh, your baby could be bigger or smaller than average, so even that can be inacurate and can, and will change a lot during the course of your pregnancy. When I was 38 weeks pregnant, my DD measured at 35-26weeks gestation, so it does change a lot depending on the size of your baby.

I hope that all makes sense?

i was confused by this with DD too, it ended up that i had two possible due dates depending on which scan they went on (didnt know my period dates) didnt matter till right at the end when they wanted to induce me...depending on which due date you went by i was either 40 weeks or almost 42 weeks...i was going by the 40 week one...the docs were going by the 42 week one....got a bit annoying cause it ment they we super keen to get baby out and i thought she had another 2 weeks possibly.
    hope you find the answers.

Based on your dating scan, if your EDD is 27 April 2010, then by my calculations you would be 14 weeks pregnant (not 13 weeks).

However, if they say bub is now 13 weeks based on measurements then EDD would be another week later.

When did you get a positive HPT?

Do you have another ultrasound booked in, this might give you another measurement to help work out where you are up to.

    take care

Thanks so much for all the feedback, ladies, it's so nice to know I am not the only one that was confused by this.

My DH and I were TTC for well over a year, so I was charting rather feverishly. I have an extremely regular 28 day cycle, and according to all my calculations I conceived approx 29 June.

kawazuki: That does make a lot of sense, thanks!

bjrose: I am definitely going to have to ask the Doc. Hrm.

tannedangel: That all makes sense too. Unfortunately my VIP FF subscription has ran out, and I can't remember my ovulation day.

beckoes: Yes, it's frustrating isn't it? A lot of the people I have spoken to in person think I should just wait, but its my first bub and of course I am anxious hehe.

Kate07: I think you're right! I am due for another ultrasound in a month, so I suppose I will have to wait and see what the Doc says and the results of that.

    Thanks again, girls. Much appreciated!
