Nup! sorry. no crustaceans allowed. you'll have to drool over someone elses
Can you or can't you eat prawns during pregnancy??
For some reason I suspect its a big fat NO but I am secretly hoping for a million YES answers
My niece is turning 13 and we're all going for a chinese dinner and I really really want garlic prawns I don't know how I am going to last until Sunday night *drool*
Thanks all

I ate them all through 3 pgs, they were Ok the first 2 times LOL (they only banned them last time)
I ate prawns as long as they were fresh, well cooked and hot (not left-overs). What is the problem with prawns? Listeria again?

Winter - I think its mercury but could be wrong
Nope sorry babe! I think its cos they are bottom of the sea dwellers, and eat all the crap and stuff like that - so they are definitely out I'm afraid.
Prawns are fine, there is no issue with the level of mercury in them as they have only a low level. The concern with prawns is actually listeria, so if you are eating them hot hot hot then you are fine.
ETA: Here is a link to the NSW Food Authority with details on what sort of fish is ok during pregnancy.
Also, it's not a complete ban on fish with mercury you just need to limit it.

I was very well behaved last pregnancy (this pregnancy I'm a little more relaxed, but still very good with the big no-no's), didn't do anything I 'shouldn't', except for the 1 time we went to a really nice seafood restaurant when I was about 7 1/2 months pregnant and I had my favourite garlic prawns. I only did it the once, and I knew the restaurant - have been going there for years and only heard good reviews about them, so I felt comfortable doing it. I'd also checked with my OB, and he said it was ok too.
So I know this is going against the grain, but I think it would be ok the once...especially if it is a good restaurant you are going to.
Otherwise can you get something else cooked instead of the prawns, like chicken or fish, even though it may not be the same, it will at least cover half the 'craving' with that garlic sauce.
Hmm, garlic prawns....now I'm drooling...might have to do a date night with DH again there soon (wonder if Mum can babysit next weekend).
If they are cooked Im sure its fine!
oooppss
i have been eating prawns hot and cold ooopsy daisy....
im not good with the no nos and that during pregnancy i just eat what i feel like..
Now I really want garlic prawns! All your fault NaeNae!
No no's I was told did my head in - it was like I couldn't eat anything:
- No prawns or other crustaceans
- No salad from a salad bar, including sandwich shops etc
- No deli meat
- No bacon!
- No soft egg yolks so no soft boiled or poached eggs. Only left me scrambled.
- Limit on certain fish cos of high levels of mercury
- No alcohol
- No coffee - or limit it
- Meat needs to be eaten within 4 weeks of freezing
- No soft cheeses
So pretty much all my favourite stuff was banned. Along with no nurofen or most other medicines.
I'm getting all the prawns and brie I can get now before we TTC again.
And now I want garlic prawns
Tashy,
You can eat bacon and deli meat providing they are cooked and served hot. I happily munch on bacon and eggs for breaky (yolks have to be cooked too unfortunately so I scramble mine).
I was under the assumption with prawns it was mercury - If i had have known it was listeria I would have been eating them all alongI don't eat fish so I do indulge in a piece of flake once every 3-5 weeks I figured that cannot do any harm.
My apologies everyone who now wants garlic prawns .... maybe we should all hit the chinese shops or RSL's for dinner tonight so we can get our fix

Prawns are perfectly fine to eat during pregnancy
Gah, I forgot the link too - Fish and mercury FAQs | NSW Food Authority
Kawazuki, you can eat prawns cold, both cooking & freezing kills the listeria bugs. 95% of prawns you buy whether they say fresh or not have been frozen. They are frozen out at sea, brought back & taken to the manufacturers. Shops like Coles etc will say "thawed for your convenience" and I would never go near those because you have no idea how long they have been thawed & if they are at correct temperature. I ate cold, whole cooked prawns at Christmas because I knew how they were dealt with. I work for a food distributor, so I knew the manufacturing company & also that my work kept them frozen at all times. They were then brought home & thawed correctly & I ate them very cold & only within an hour of thawing. So if you really really must have cold prawns, you can just make sure you buy them from a reputable company & buy them frozen![]()
