For the first time ever my belly ring got infected when I was about 32wks pg. I took the ring out. I managed to drain some pus out by squeezing it (sorry TMI) and then put on Savlon for a couple of days. It cleared up very quickly. I didn't put my ring back in again until after DS was born.
