    Irritable uterus

    Hi,

Just got diagnosed with irritable uterus. i am 38w5d gestation. Just wanted to know others experiences with irritable uteri. I just dont know what to think. I get that they say the tightenings dont cause effacement, so does this mean that all the discomfort/pain is in no way helping to prepare my uterus for my impending delivery? Or are they likely to trigger bh, or proper contractions.

I am not worried about going into labour any day now, as i am close to due date anyway. But am just annoyed and frustrated, at the idea that it is going to be even harder for me to distinguish when i am actually going into labour. I just feel totally useless and out of control.

Ive had IU with several of mine..........very frustrating. Started at about 30 wks and just went from there.........alllll the time.

I would just have bouts of regular contractions but they would stop after several hours (sometimes up to 12 or more) and there would be no cervix change. So yes, i got like you are worried about, never thought it was the real thing so would ignore them. I have to say though, please go and get checked every time, i was happily ignoring my 5 mins apart contractions at 34 wks with #4, and my friends came and made me go to the hospital just to get checked out, turned out DD was in distress and they had to induce me. So please get checked if at all you ever feel you need to. Just to be on the safe side...............and because you are so close to your EDD that any bout of IU could be the real thing.

thanks kristi, its nice to know there are others out there, especially due to the small amount of information available about this condition. i had another bout last night lasting for over 3hrs, of just continuous tightenings. if they start feeling different i will definately get checked out, thanks for your concern.

No worries, happy to have helped

Yes, there is very little information out there isnt there.

If you have another bout try to slow down and pretty much do nothing. Have a shower and try laying down and just relax. It generally happens when you have overdone things but not always...........but relaxing is definitely what you need to do when it happens.

How are you going today, Bskilner?
You are so close now! I remember our time in the TWW thread in September - and here you are now, so close!

I am sorry to hear that you were feeling useless and out of control earlier in the week. I hope you are feeling stronger now.

I wish you all the best for your labour and birth. I am looking forward to your BA.

thanks ash, yes getting close now. i am feeling alright today, though i had bh contractions last night which were leading to back pain. so had bath, some panadeine, then went to bed with a heat pack and eventually nodded off. but for all i know these could just mean that the big day is getting closer.

Hi darl, I had it with both of mine right from the word go, with my DS it never led anywhere other than numerous trips to emergency throughout the pregnancy.

With my DD I ended up getting contractions at 21wks which led to me losing some of the plug, but after that I just got constant BHs until 37wks when prelabour kicked in (the contractions from irritable uterus were pretty much the same as prelabour in intensity and duration for me) and they found I was 1-2cm dilated (I never even dilated or stated to efface prior to being induced with my DS), then I had 3 weeks of constant prelabour before they broke my waters the morning of the day my DD was born where I was 2cm dilated before they broke my waters and 3cm right afterwards.
Sometimes the irritable uterous can help, other times it won't.

Hope you get to hold your bub in your arms soon

No problem darl, it's hard living with the constant pain and discomfort from it, and very few people actually understand what it's like, many just assume it's only BHs and it doesn't hurt, but we know differently.

mainly just replying to subscribe, would like to get people's wisdom on this!
I think I had the wrong idea of what irritable uterus was- I am 31wk and I thought I had IU because I get BH really often (and have since 16wks). Its not painful or regular or anything, but they do get triggered by things like DH putting his hand on my belly or even just thinking about my uterus, so I thought that was 'irritable'.
I'm a little bit paranoid about bub coming early, mainly cos a friend of mine was put on bed rest at 25 weeks cos she was effacing and didnt even know it! Every time I get a slightly different, lower feeling, I get worried! I wonder if my BH will get stronger and stronger and end up with something like this?

one thing I will say though bskilner, the way I think about it, is that every time your uterus contracts it is like working a muscle, so its going to be nice and strong by the time it comes to pushing out baby! So its not wasted!

Hey, yeah my little boy is 8 days old today
I did keep having Braxton hicks, but they settled down a lot and stopped being so responsive.
I did end up with a fairly quick first stage of labour (~6hrs) given that he was posterior so maybe all that practicing paid off!
How are things going for you?

yeh good here, my labour went relatively well too. my waters broke at 11.50pm, then i started having contractions. by 8am they were coming every 5mins, so went to hospital and was told i was 7cm dilated and they were suprised by how well i was doing. so in the end maybe all the bh did make a difference.
