Hi everyone,
I'm new on here. Did a test today and it came back positive but has already got me thinking about a few things.
My husband and I are living in the UK and heading home to Aus in 2 weeks (yay!) and we tried to get a doctor's appt today but it seems a bit complicated since we are leaving so soon. It is almost 6 weeks since my last monthly friend so will it matter if I wait til we are back home before seeing a doctor? I presume I am at low risk of complications - it only took us a month to conceive and we are both in mid-20's.
Also, we have one last trip planned to Finland next week. We were planning to go on a husky dog sled ride. At this early stage would there be much effect on the baby? They don't recommend it to pregnant people or is this more so for more advanced pregnancies so that it doesn't put too much pressure on the organs, ligaments etc when bumping around. Has anyone ever been on one of these?? I don't know if we could ask them to just take it slow... (or is that wishful thinking )
Hope someone can offer some advice as it's all a bit new to me!
Cheers.
About the prenatal appointment - you should be fine to wait. My midwives don't see me for the first time until 10 weeks anyways. You should consider what kind of care you want and what kind of birth you are hoping for, and look for someone who is in line with your philosophy on pregnancy and birth.
If things are going to go wrong in pregnancy before 10 weeks, I don't think there's much anyone can do, really, and not much for them to check on yet anyways - the heart beat can't be heard yet, no measurements to take, etc.
Take your prenatal vitamins, eat well, rest as much as you can, and avoid the foods, drinks, and medications that are not recommended during pregnancy.
About the dogsledding - I really can't help you there! Ask your doctor/midwife when you get your appointment. Or do a google search.
OK, I just did a real quick search and came up with a story from a woman who went with her family while she was pregnant. All she said was that she wished she had another pillow.
Anyways, I'd still ask your doctor about it to be sure.
Congrats on the pregnancy and all the best!
Congrats on your pregnancy and welcome to BellyBelly. I agree, dont worry about the appointment until you get back to Aus. As for the sledding, I know its not the same, but I went snow boarding when I was 9 weeks pg with my 1st. I just took it easy and made sure if I was going to fall I would fall not on my tummy. I have also been 4wding when I was 6 months pregnant. Thats probably similar to your sledding. It was really bumpy, I wish I had a pillow for comfort and a toilet...or extra pads! Your little one is deep inside your pelvis at the moment so it should be fairly well protected.
As long as you see a doctor in the first 12 weeks you're fine They usually will give you your referral to a prenatal clinic/ob/hospital, depending on your choices. They will also order blood work & possibly even a scan. Maybe some extra tests.
Just so you know, if its been about 6 weeks since you had AF (monthly friend) then you are about 6 weeks along. They date from the first day of your last period.
The sledding should be ok, since there are alot of people at this stage who don't even know they are pregnant yet
Firstly - congratulations!
As the others have said you will be fine to have an appointment when you get back. The only thing I would perhaps look into is if you want to see a specific ob or get into a birth centre of midwifery practice you might want to see if you can set up a booking now and get a referral for that service when you get back into Australia. Not all services will accept a booking without the referal but some do (I booked with my ob then got the referral from my GP before my first ob appointment).
On the husky sled ride - I've done one (but not while I was pregnant) and I didn't experience anything that I would have concerned me if I was pregnant. The sled I went on was a 4 person one, where you sit on sled (plenty wide enough for my butt, so worries there) and sit your feet either side in kind of a squatting position. It was probably like a mid pace motor bike ride speed wise, but it felt safer than a motorbike because what we were sitting on was a lot bigger and steadier and we weren't doing sharp turns or anything like that, and at no point did I feel like I was going to fall off or anything.
I wouldn't like to say, 'yeah you will be fine go for it' because only you can assess if you are ok with it. When I went (in Sweden) there were husky tours every day so I had seen the dogs out and about before I went and saw what it was like. Perhaps you can check them out before your ride is booked and see what you think? I reackon when you see it you will be fine with it but I'll leave that to you.
Also, enjoy it! It was so much fun and the dogs are great, a little highly strung but fun all the same. It is definately a once in a life time experience.
Thanks for your replies! It has put our minds at ease. I did have a feeling there wasn't actually much the doctor could do at this stage except confirm things and maybe give some advice. So i'll just take it easy and hope everything goes on as it normally would.
Am definitely excited again for our Finland trip and think I will do the sledding, unless I get there and it looks different to what I thought.
Thanks again for your advice.
Cheers
