    GD test tomorrow- any preparation?

    hello

i've got my GD test tomorrow (1st test) and i've totally forgotten if you need to do anything in prepartion. do you have to not eat carbs or something?
last time i failed the first test but then passed the 2nd longer test, so i really don't want to have to go through that again..

i was told to fast for 12 hour (i think) before hand. so the night before coz my app was 8am. That was for the 2 hour GTT tho.

Yep 12 hour fast. Try and have a healthy dinner like meat and veg. (not huge pile of pasta or carbs)

you can drink water in the morning and it is recommended that you do cos it makes it easier to find the vein and get the blood out. take a water bottle with you for little sips throughout the morning, but not too much.

    take a good book.

if you just show up without an appt go in early, they sometimes give first preference to those who will be there for a while.

take a snack in your bag to eat as soon as you are all done.

and drink the yucky sweet stuff slowly but steadily, they only give you 5 minutes, but that can go pretty quckly. Dont skull it! its super sweet, your tummy might object.

    think thats it.... HTH.

I was told not to fast and to jsut wat what I normally would. The only time i couldnt eat or drink was after I had the glucose drink. I had that then didnt eat or drink anything for the next hour then had my blood test and was right to eat again.

Hope that made sense. Good luck for tomorrow

Unless they gave you instructions to fast, you can do what you like! Have a look on your request sometimes there are instructions on the back. Again, if not, eat away. I don't have to fast for mine.....

I got told to just eat what I would normally eat, no fasting involved.
I was however told to not eat a mars bar (or some other really sugary thing) right before coming to the test.

Are you doing the 1 hour or the 2 hour test?? They usually require you to be fasting for the first blood test they take and the 2 hour GTT usually requires a special diet for 3 days before hand for carbohydrate loading.

I would eat unless they have told you otherwise. I ate with both my tests.. long and short. Id just stear clear of anything with sugar in it tbh. No juice, no jam etc for breaky. Just have some toast with vegemite and a glass of milk or water.
I ate a biscuit before my first one with DS and had to end up doing the long test as my level was 9.4! Long test came back fine.

    Best of luck with it.

From the royal college of pathologists Asutralia website. RCPA.

Info on the GCT- glucose challenge test -
The non-fasting patient drinks 50 g or 75 g glucose in a flavoured drink over ten minutes.

One hour after commencing the drink, a specimen of blood is taken for plasma glucose.
non-fasting- ie. you don't have to fast for this test.

The GTT- Glucose tolerance test is a different story, special diet required for 3 days prior, fasting etc.

I know some pathology places ask people to fast even for the one hour test, but from this information i would presume it is unnecessary. Maybe they do it to avoid having to do alot of unnecessary GTT. Uou are less likely to get a borderline result in a fasting patient compared to one who had hotcakes with maple syrup for breakfast.

was going to recommend you call pathology and see what they want but its prob too late now let us know how you go! and what exactly you had to do.

i went straight to the two hour test with fasting but no special diet before hand. ????

ali- did you feel sick when you were sitting there waiting for the hour?

the only reason i'm asking is that last time i didn't feel sick at all and failed the test, but this time i felt really sick- so am hoping that means i'll pass!

I also felt sick while waiting and got really uncomfortable in my own skin - all fidgety and stuff.

    I passed too!

Good luck Rainforest! My advice would be that if you don't hear back in 2-3 days, ring your ob or midwife for the results. I think my ob said that if you don't hear back, you passed but when I didn't hear I called to double check.
