I read somewhere the other day that clary sage can help to induce labour, is this true? I've heard you rub it on your tummy and its meant to bring on contractions is that right?
Has anyone used it and did it work? Oh and where do you buy it? Does it have to be diluted at all?
I'm just looking into natural induction methods just in case i need them if i go over my Edd because there is NO way i'm getting induced again (well not if i can help it anyway )
Thanks!
I had a bath (10 drops) in it about two weeks before i was due and sat a face washer on my belly with more on it, so i could get a good smell of it. But no, didnt do anything for me. Though it was probably because my body wasnt ready at the time.
Clary sage (and this goes for the vast majority of essential oils) should NEVER be used undiluted directly on the skin. If using for massage, some caution should be used, at the least you should obtain a reputable book on aromatherapy, or consult a qualified aromatherapist. Depending on the oil, one or two drops to a tablespoon of carrier oil is sufficient. If using essential oils for massage during pregnancy further dilution is suggested.
Clary sage (jasmine is another suitable labour oil) will stimulate and tone the uterus and so will assist and strengthen contractions. It is usually recommended that it only be used once labour has started. (It is also a useful oil during menstruation).
To be honest, I don't think that there is a trick in the world that will bring on labour if the body is not actually ready, but it can be helped along. You might find acupuncture more useful though.
Like Suse said, it'll most likely only work if your body is read to go into labour. But it is great for during labour especially if contractions start to fizzle out.
No harm in using it though if you use it correctly. Also, don't just use it once and think 'oh that didnt work' and not use it again. Keep trying. Make a time each day and massage your belly or bathe in it while burning some in an oil burner.
