Non medical/gender scans - did you have one?

Has anyone had one of the non-medical/gender scans? These weren't around when I had my two DS's, but I see now there's a place locally who does them. I am quite keen to find out the gender, and wondered what other people's experience was with them? Good, bad, or otherwise

I had a 3d/4d non-diagnostic one with DS. Not to find out the gender (I already knew) but just for a keepsake. Was really good and now I have a DVD for DS to watch if he ever wants to.

Generally you are told the gender at the 19/20 week morphology scan, which is a medical scan. So unless you want one, there is no need to have a 3/4D scan for gender purposes.

DD had her legs shut and we couldn't see the gender at our morph scan. We had a 3d scan and it was so worth it seeing her move around and stuff there so cool.

I had them for #3 and this current one, both times for gender as each time I had rescans at 20 and 22 weeks, bub didn't show.
I also had 4d scan at 32 weeks with #3 as it was part of a package.

I loved it and if you want a keepsake and know gender, do it, so worth the money

We were gifted a gender scan by my FIL at 18 weeks. We were taken into a lovely room with plush furniture and fresh flowers and told we were expecting a girl.

10 days later at our 20 week scan we were shown what was very very clearly a penis.

I would NEVER get a non medical scan done again!

I was thinking about getting this done. Perhaps not..

It was honestly distressing. And they actually said it was "without a doubt" a girl. It took me a few weeks to let go of my girl and fall in love with my boy.

We had one for DD1 at about 34 weeks. It was very nice and all that and we got some nice pics and a video. I would never ever go before the 20 week scan for two reasons; one, I wouldn't trust being told the sex, and something like what happened to Aimz would be extremely upsetting for me. Two, they have no fat earlier on and don't look cute IMO. The scan at 34 weeks looked exactly like DD1, very cool. We didn't have it done for DD2 because it's really a first time baby thing for me. We didn't feel it was necessary and couldn't justify the cost a second time.

Agreed about the fat thing PZ! Our 20 week scan flipped it over to 3D because that's just what they do and boy oh boy did our babe look like an alien! Skin and bone!

I had oodles of scans - one at every single appointment, basically - with DS2 because of the issues faced while birthing DS1. I didn't get pictures at each of them, and they were all the usual black and white jobbies (not the 4D ones).

It was nice and reassuring and all the rest of it, but it was only because of the issues first time around.

They were just at the hospital, with the Ob.

Thanks for all your replies They switched over to 3d at my NT scan, so I've seen that bubs is still skin & bones. It was still awesome to see the extra detail/different images! I had a scan yesterday to check my subchorionic bleed and I asked if they would be able to see the gender, but bubs had his/her legs closed. It's made me even more impatient to find out now! lol.

My main worry is having an experience like yours, Aimz. I can totally understand it would have been distressing

I'm currently pregnant with twins, we had a scan at 16 weeks and were told that we were having 2 boys. It was only a 2d scan, but I think they were still too small to get a good clear indication. Then at the morph scan we were told that we had 1 boy & 1 girl. It was so much clearer to see the gender at 20 weeks. Needless to say I was desperate for confirmation that they were boy & girl, so I had a 4d private scan done. Costly yes, but we already have 2 boys so I was desperate to make sure we were having a girl! And yes 1 boy & 1 girl!

As much as the wait until 20 weeks takes forever, I would save your money and wait.
