    Pap smear?

Would you get one whilst pregnant?

So Im will be 11 weeks tomorrow, and I have an appt with my Gp to get my blood results and all that jazz. Because my last pap was in oct 08' and I was due for one last oct, she wants me to have one done.
Although Im pretty sure that paps arent reccommended during pregnancy(?) The gp seems to think it'll be fine, and that they will be gentle, but my gut is telling me its not a great idea to have one done.. Im actually pretty fearful of it potentially leading to a miscarriage.

    What do you think?

I wouldn't while pregnant. Maybe later in pregnancy, but not so early.
Reminds me that I really need one. Gah. My first.

I think it depends on your previous tests, if you are at risk, how frequently you have had them etc. Even so I left mine til after bubs was born and I had treatment from CIN2 and CIN3 cells prior to getting pg. I think the other reasoning is that if they find abnormal cells that need treatment they won't do it while you are pg anyway?? Maybe have a chat to your gp about your concerns and postpone it for your post birth check up hun. coxox

    Thanks ladies!

I've always had clear paps, so Im not concerned about that... Thats another thing i was thinking about Transtar, if anything was to come up then I have to spend the rest of the pregnancy worrying about that on top of sprout, and thats not fair to either of us.

Charlotte, i feel your pain, paps are definately not fun, and I defnately dread them. (not unlike most women )

My 2-yearly paps have come up during both my pregnancies and both times the GP said to leave it til our 6 week check. I'm really surprised that your GP would recommend you have one now if your past ones have been normal.
Personally, I'd refuse any internals of any kind during pregnancy (unless I want to know how far dilated I am during labour, which I did during both although should've refused during the second labour but that's another story, LOL). 6-7 months isn't too long to wait beyond the 2 years if you're a person who isn't high risk IMO!

My gp also said to wait until my 6am check and that was with abnormal results previously.
She also mentioned sometimes during pg you get a false pap result iykwim.

I was overdue for mine when I fell pregnant. Dr insisted I have it done, so I did, I was about 7-8 weeks pregnant at the time. It was fine and came back clear.
But I wasnt very happy about doing it and think it was probably unnecessary anyway.
Sometimes it will show abnormal cells falsely because you are pregnant and there isn't much they can do while your pregnant if it does come back abnormal, so not worth the stress and worry imo.
If I had my choice again I would skip it.

My last pap was October 08, too, and when I got pregnant last October my doc said we'll wait until after baby is born. So I'm overdue but I'll get one now she's born. No biggy, you're still getting them regularly which is better than most women.

BBB- Thats why I thought pap smears were pointless in pregnancy because of teh occurance of abnormal cells and what not due to pregnancy.

It just sounded so silly to give me one when its not entirely needed.. Especially when pregnancy plays with your body that much that results cant be that accurate (?)

Maybe I should do a deal with my gp tomorrow that if I skip it now and promise to get one after sprout is born (and Im comfortable to do one)..

My last papsmear was 8 years ago, i was 6mths pregnant when i had it done, the dr insisted cause it had been 5 years since the one before that, and that one was my first one.
I didnt have any issues at all having it done at 6th months.

I've had three pregnancies. DS is the happy product of pregnancy one, and I'm happily 20 weeks now. With pregnancy #2 I had a pap smear and a miscarriage. Completely unrelated I'm sure, but it made me say never again! My GP recommended it, my Ob when he saw I was overdue (before the results came back) was keen to wait until afterwards. As I said, probably completely unrelated (I was 6 weeks pg, bubs stopped developing at 6 weeks), but just the association wound up in my head.

The research would say it's completely safe but if you've had no history of abnormal smears, what's the problem with waiting - plenty of women don't have regular smears, just have it at 6 weeks.

i had one at about 6 weeks with pregnancy number 2 and it came back abnormal - post pregnancy it was fine. i consequently wait until after pregnancy now as I don't like the higher possibility of it coming back with a false abnormality.

My 2 years has just run out but there is no way I would have one while pregnant. So my GP also suggested I just wait until my 6 week check, which Im happy with

My GP wouldn't give me one when I was PG with DD despite me being due for one.

I had been really naughty and managed to avoid having one (only had sex with DH when we got married, and got pregnant just before our 5th anniversary. When I had my first OB appointment (12 weeks) my OB strongly recommended it, and did one that day. Not entirely pleasant, but over and done with, and all came back fine.

I am over due for a pap test but Ob advised against having it done whilst preg so will have one after bub is born. Maybe after the 6 week check up incase I have tearing again (why I missed it last time too tender still).

    Thanks ladies!

I ended up being able to avoid the pap. At the medical centre I go to, there is an OB, who advocated that the pap isnt needed. Which Im am so grateful about! So now the dreaded pap will have to wait until after this little one is born!
