Both my mother and grandmother have Type 2 diabetes, plus my mother had GD with her 3rd pregnancy. So Ive always done the 2hr GTT in my pregnancies and passed no worries.
My midwife put the wrong label on my referral and I ended up having to do the 1hr GCT, even though I had fasted for 8hrs before hand. So I had some vegemite toast and then did the test.
She rang today and said I failed it has to be under 7.3 and I was 8.4 *wails* Now I not only have to do the 2hr test now but I am panicking that I could have GD (even though I have no other symptoms and bub isnt overly big) because I had not had anything sugary in over 12hrs before the test, only ate toast about 1/2 before I did it and obviously only had the glucose drink.
For those who've been in a similar situation (or who are trained in these things) do you think I have something to really worry about?
Would be so typical that my one awesome pregnancy ends up being the one I get GD with *sigh*
Anna with this bub my 1hr test came back at 9.4 and i had not eaten a thing in over 14 hours before it. I was stressed to the max. I was sent for the 2 hour test and it came back perfectly normal and under the right levels.
My mum also has type 2 diabetes. My sister had GD in all 3 of her pregnancies...i had it in none.
Anna, try not to stress about it. Chances are it will come back fine during the 2 hour test. If your levels were 8.4 after one hour, it's looking good that they will be below 8 after 2 hours which is the indicator they use. The fact that you had something to eat will also have changed the results as your next test (2hour) will be a fasting test. I failed mine and have GD, but my 3 levels throughout the test were 5.6, 10.1, 8.4. I've been dealing with it for 10weeks now and everything is fine.
Good luck...and don't get stressed because that pushes up your blood sugar level too!!!
Anna.. I had high blood sugar for in the first test for my first and second pregnancy and they both came back normal after the 2 hr... Fingers crossed for you!! Keep us posted!!
Anna
its is quite common to fail GCT and then be nothing wrong
I failed the GCT with my twins- didnt have to do the next test as i had them instead- oops
I also failed it this time with my singleton. Had to do the two hour test- its no biggie and passed it no probs. So maybe we just take a little longer than the recommended time for our sugar to return to normal after that 'yummy' drink!
I was pretty confident that all was going to be fine as well, before i did the second test - no signs or symptons of GD. My mum also has type 2 db as well. But all is good here
