I've had so much trouble eating almost anything during my first trimester that I've started drinking protein shakes just to try and make sure I'm getting enough protein (and the other nutrients that they often have) - but I've recently noticed that they have vitamin A in them (17% of RDI for 250ml). Should I avoid them then? Or is that amount safe if I'm only having one a day?
i was told by my doctor, midwife and dietition to avoid shakes that supliment something else. I personally wouldnt be taking them ide be finding something that i can eat and taking some vitamins if its that bad.
Most shakes I have ever looked at mention not for pregnant or breastfeeding, so I would double check what it says on the packing of the one you are drinking.
I agree with the other girls, those kind of shakes aren't meant for preg woman so i would see your doc or even ask the chemist what other vitamins or supplements you could have while your preg.
Good luck
Hi Sterla, I agree with the others, it is best to get your nutrients from food and prenatal supplements. If you really cant stomach eating much then get some 100% pure whey powder with nothing added to make your own smoothies - just blend it with milk and fruit and drink it with your prenatal supplements. The protein shakes you can buy are full of sugar/sweeteners, colours, flavours and additives, so by just getting the pure whey powder (which is where the protein comes from) you are cutting all that out and still getting a boost of protein.
I had a few "Up & Go's" 250ml (not every day) when i was in my first weeks of pregnancy because i too had so much trouble eating i was so nauseous and they seemed to go down well.... they don't say anything on the packaging about not for pregnant women so i figured a few wouldn't hurt?? I was so worried i wasn't getting enough nutrients (i am on blackmores pregnancy gold anyway).
Sterla - thats not much Vit A anyway, plus in our diets even when pregnant we need some Vitamin A, they just say not to 'overdose' on it.
Should i be worried now????

Yeah, it was Up & Go's that I was having, and I had one try at sustagen but didn't like it very much. I'm taking Blackmores Pregnancy Gold too - so hopefully with those and the food that I can actually still eat I'm getting everything bubs and I need.
I thought you were talking about the protien shakes that you get from health food stores that people who work out drink, not Up and Go's. Up and Go's should be ok, but as with any "replacement" food you are still better off having the real thing if you can.
Sterla - yeah they went down well for me too! I also was eating fruit veges meat etc alongside it, so if anything we are getting more than enough nutrients & vitamins!
I had one today (before reading this) but haven't had any others for about a week.... not really needing them anymore as i'm able to eat better now.
you should be able to start feeling better soon as you enter 2nd tri....
As Astrid said, as long as it's not the 'body building protein shakes' we should be fine.
Sterla, up and go's are fine, im pretty sure you could drink one a day and still be ok. 1 doesnt fill me up so i'd have to have like 2-3. lol.
Check with the chemist or your doc to be safe though, i too thought you were talking about workout protein shake thingo's. lol. Prob the blonde hair and prego brain doing it to me.
