I used tiger balm. I was advised that if it was helping with my pain than the risks far outweighed the benefits. I was unable to take anything stronger than panadol for pain too as I'm allergic to codeine. Tiger balm was a blessing.

I just had a look in my Australian Medicines Handbook (I'm a pharmacist), and deep heat type rubs are fine to use in small areas (basically just use where it hurts). I'd probably stay away from Voltaren type gels, just a theoretical risk, unless GP says ok. Tiger Balm is much nicer smelling, if you don't like the footy shed smell.![]()
