Thanks for the concern, but I highly doubt it. Firstly, I felt really unwell coming into the third trimester. I thought it was normal not having been pregnant before, but once I was diagnosed with GD and was on the diet, I felt 100% better. I believe that some people are asymptomatic, but I really felt so generally yuck, like I'd always overindulged in really heavy decadent foods.
Secondly, even following the diet I would have some ridiculously high readings and the only way we were able to get my blood sugars down was to control via insulin which we started at about 31-32 weeks.
Son was born at 36.5 weeks due to PE (later onset) and he weighed 3050g. I hate to imagine how big he would have been had I gone undiagnosed and full term. Bear in mind that I'm only 5'2 borderline weight and hubby is about 5'8 very lean. Neither of us was a big baby and it certainly isn't something that seems to run in either of our families.
I just had my GTT this morning for DD and I have been feeling and felt during the test completely different. Not sick or anything. Fingers crossed that it just hasn't returned. People aren't kidding when they say each pregnancy feels different. But I've also heard lots of people say they were sick during the test and passed without problem, it just seems to be my experience.
Good luck Belfie, I hope all goes well with you GTT. If you do happen to fail, the one benefit I found of GD was that I was back at pre-preg weight within three weeks due to the restricted diet in last trimester! Don't know if I'd want to give up the chocolate like that again though.
Belfie - I had mine done at Melbourne Pathology and they don't make you do the diet either - just fast. Don't read anything into being sick. It does not mean you have GD, nor does it mean you don't have it. I was paranoid when I had both my tests done as I had absolutely no reaction to it so I figured I must've had GD - I didn't. Best of luck when you go to get it done again.
When I did my GTT last time I was told that many people do feel sick/are sick from the drink so I don't think it's uncommon. It is very sickly and sugary so I'm not surprised that you were sick - especially after the fasting. I always feel sick when I don't eat regardless of being pregnant or not. I'm sure they're used to people throwing up on the floor
hey everyone,
thanks for the replies. I found out today that my 1 hr result was apparently 'positive' and they'll probably be sending me to an endocrinologist... so while I don't know if that's a definitive GD result or not yet, sounds like at the very least I'm looking at impaired glucose tolerance. And I got the impression they won't be making me re-take the test... so there's a silver lining in every storm cloud I guess. But the whole thing is a bit of a bummer.
I've read some of the literature on here about whether GD really should be considered a "true" disease per se... and I think I'm just confused now. Oh well. Plus to add to it, I've already got other dietary restrictions which just make it a bit of a pain in the proverbial to put it mildly.
So I'm just going to wallow in self-pity for a bit, trot out the socially acceptable "positive" party line in public... and vent in here. Thanks again.
Belfie
Oh no . I am sorry to hear that the results weren't good, but I am relieved for you that you don't have to go through that again. Best of luck with the endocrinologist.
