    Stretch Marks

I dislike how the media and advertising either:

    a) Assumes no one has them

    b) Implies that it is "wrong" to have them

    c) Implies that there is something "wrong" with us if we do have them.

In my opinion, my stretch marks are just bad luck or genetics (despite my mum never having any).

I rubbed everything I could - including Bio Oil - into my gut from day one and I still have heaps.

Husband and I were talking a few days ago about how the media forces us into certain opinions of what is beautiful and was is "right" and "wrong" about how we "should" look. Media and advertising of pregnant women is altered and photoshopped just as much as media of non pregnant women.

I said that if I had the money and was/could become well marketed/exposed online and in life I would SERIOUSLY consider getting the outlines of my stretch marks tattooed on, just to challenge the world's view of beauty a little bit more.

Yes I am obviously feeling rather anarchic today.

So here is my "stuff you" to the media for assuming that I should feel bad about my stretch marks!

    Please note:

I did read the guidelines before posting this and as I can gather, this does not count as posting images directly into the topic.

No photo on the link below is sexually explicit - it is belly shots only.

However if you are, or might be offended by photos showing belly skin and stretch marks, or pale skin, or whatever - do not look at them. All photos are my own property. You choose to view at your own risk. There IS a shot of my holding my boobs up to show my belly better (it was signed by a comedian) but everything is covered and there is no sexual nature to it. again, if you are offended by pregnant bellies, don't look at the link. All photos taken at 36-37 weeks.

If you are on dial up please be warned that the below URL links to images which will take time to load.

Mods - please let me know if I have accidentally overlooked a rule here.

WOW you had your beautiful belly signed by Tim Minchin *drool* he is hhhhuuuuuuhhhhh so damn fine.

I think your belly is beautifully coloured in a really great pattern too, it almost looks like a beautiful piece of pottery. OK so how did you get it so even ??

lol - Let's petition Tim Minchin to write a song about stretch marks. Might not help our cause, but would be a laugh!
I'm going to get them. I know it. I'm alredy on the body butter - twice a day, if only so I can say to my SIL "Actually, it's nothing to do with the body butter, you've got awesome genes"
I got stretch marks at 12 when I hit puberty and my fabulous childbearing hips started to appear

Thanks for your fresh perspective Angela. It's very sad the way the media sanitise beauty to acheive some idealistic agenda. Notice how when a man has scars, they are considered to give him character and 'edge', but when a woman has them, its considered to be ugly?
Wouldn't it be so fab if some hot celebrity Mum was snapped taking a stroll along the beach in a bikini, proudly displaying her battlescars? But, no doubt they all run off to get laser surgery because they are all terrified of looking less than the modern world's idealisation of 'perfect'!
I bet in some traditional cultures the women are respected and honoured for bearing these scars, just as they measure a woman's wisdom by the lines on her face.

    Hi Ladies

    I totally agree.

What is SO sad is that my own mother referred to my stretch marks as "disgusting". Then she said giving birth to a baby that is over 40 weeks gestation is "gross".

So much for all her harping on about all pregnancies being a "precious miracle"...hypocrite much?

Yes - got belly signed by Tim Minchin but also by Amanda Palmer. Last night I got it signed by Adam Hills!

Yes, I am slightly nuts :-)

I wear my stretch marks with pride. I even joke to DF sometimes if he ever gets lost, I'm a walking map.
