Question Two supply tubes to baby?

    Hi

I have a friend who is pregnant with twins. She had an ultrasound recently, and they were worried because one baby only had 'one supply tube from Mum to baby'.

    The other twin had two.

Do you know what this might be? Is it arteries or veins in umbilical cord?

The presence of only one tube was also an indicator that the bub might have down syndrome.

Does this make sense? I couldn't work it out.

    Thanks,

    k

its arteries. Most people have 2 going to bub and 1 vien going through them if that make sense.

I wouldnt be too worried about it. Might mean that bub with 1 may be a little smaller? im not sure really. hopefully someone who has had twins will pop in here. hrrm down syndrome? dont let that freak her out. doctors say all sorts of things. btw, the 2 arteries are in the ambilical cord.

    Thanks. arteries that makes sense.

I haven't heard of that being marker for DS.

Both bubs have another measurement in the brain between the two halves that is a little larger than normal. again. i don't have the proper terms bc i was getting info from the Dad who is not too medically savvy. Normal is 8 (mm?). Both bubs measurement is 10.

Based on twin 1 having this measurement and only one supply tube (artery), they have given 1/10 chance of DS in this twin but not worried about twin 2.

I thought this was probably excessive risk, given measurement was seen in both twins and they weren't worried about twin 2.

The couple are not having invasive tests (amnio), but are going back for another ultrasound in 2 weeks to check measurement.

Anybody heard of only one artery being sign of DS?

    thanks,

    k
