uh-oh - I eat peanut butter almost every day

    I just read the following..."
Eating peanuts while pregnant may raise child's allergy risks

Mon, Nov 1, 2010 (HealthDay News) — Women who eat peanuts during pregnancy may be putting their babies at increased risk for peanut allergy, a new study suggests.

U.S. researchers looked at 503 infants, aged 3 months to 15 months, with suspected egg or milk allergies, or with the skin disorder eczema and positive allergy tests to milk or egg. These factors are associated with increased risk of peanut allergy, but none of the infants in the study had been diagnosed with peanut allergy.

Blood tests revealed that 140 of the infants had strong sensitivity to peanuts. Mothers' consumption of peanuts during pregnancy was a strong predictor of peanut sensitivity in the infants, the researchers reported in the Nov. 1 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

"Researchers in recent years have been uncertain about the role of peanut consumption during pregnancy on the risk of peanut allergy in infants. While our study does not definitively indicate that pregnant women should not eat peanut products during pregnancy, it highlights the need for further research in order to make recommendations about dietary restrictions," study leader Dr. Scott H. Sicherer, a professor of pediatrics at Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, said in a journal news release.

Sicherer and his colleagues recommended controlled, interventional studies to further explore their findings.

"Peanut allergy is serious, usually persistent, potentially fatal, and appears to be increasing in prevalence," Sicherer said."

I have peanut butter on toast 5 out of 7 days a week! Will my baby be allergic to peanuts...and it will be my fault!

I had peanut butter most days, & both my kids are fine. I think you only have to be concerned if there's a family history of allergies

I was addicted to eggs when pg with DD and to peanut butter when pg with DS, both of them have come out fine with no allergies! Like DB says, I think you only really need to worry if your family has a history.

I reckon. Isn't it just ridiculous.

I didn't exactly cut out all the foods you're not *supposed* to eat. Though it did help that i couldnt eat ANYTHING for the most part of my pregnancy

But one of my cravings were those rockly roads from darryl lea and i was so upset as they have peanuts but then my mum told me to stop being stupid she ate peanuts all the time throughout her 4 pregnancies and we all turned out fine. And my doctor said it was fine as long as no one in our families are allergic.

I ate a lot of cashews while pg, and ds is allergic. No one else in the family is. Dd is allergic to paw paw, but I can't explain that one since I hate the stuff. Dunno

with DD i ate atleast 4 or 5 rice thinswith peanut butter and honey EVERY DAY for most of my pregnancy! At times it was all i could stomach! DD now LOVES peanut butter on toast! My GP told me to avoid nuts but i didnt really understand the logic behind it, surly by avoiding it you are leaving them open to being over sensitive! But they are the docs i guess! i wouldnt worry too much about it!

Ohhh, the nut backflip. I was wondering when it might go back to don't eat during pg. This one goes back and forth all the time. I wouldn't worry about it. When 95% of literature says "no nuts" I'll listen. Until then, they can just keep on swilling their test tubes.

Dd is allergic to paw paw, but I can't explain that one since I hate the stuff. Dunno
I'm pretty sure that pawpaw hate crosses the placenta. Can't remember where I saw that article, but I'm sure it was somewhere

When the time comes, I think I'll do what someone I know in the US did. The first time she gave her son peanut butter she did it in the car park for the ER at the hospital. She figured if something went wrong, she was in the right place!

    lol buliej, that's clever thinking!
We did something similar, but not on purpose. Emily had an allergic reaction one day at daycare, and we took her to the dr. We weren't sure at that point what she'd eaten, and he wanted to test peanut butter, so we bought some, and while at the dr's we tried it. And no reaction

Study this, study that. The other day I read something that said not giving our babies/children nuts and the other allergy-likely foods was making them more likely to have allergies.

FWIW, my only cravings during pg, mostly in my 2nd tri, were peanut butter sandwiches and strawberry milk. I had those every day for at least a couple of months! DD has no allergies at all, to anything. She loves nuts!

Maybe I'd avoid them if there were known family issues, but just as much for my sake as my baby's.

I ate so much peanut butter, and literally handfuls of cashews and almonds, throughout my pregnancy, I thought bub would look like a peanut when it came out, it was my all time constant craving.

DD has had peanut butter on toast on several occasions with no reaction at all, in fact I think it's a pretty familiar taste But we don't have any history of allergies to worry about, but I still made sure I was fully dressed when I first tried it in case I had to rush to the docs!

Ok this is my personal opinion:

The reason kids these days have so many allergies is because we as pg women keep getting told: "don't eat this, it's bad for your baby"... Our parents generation had no idea about half the stuff we are aware of these days and if I think about it, how many kids my age (24) have a severe allergy to peanuts?? Barely any!! Our parents ate peanuts and other nuts the whole way through their pg's with us and we are fine.
I am not stopping from eating peanut butter because I think personally it is silly and not eating it means that no tollerance is built up and they will have more chance of being allergic!! Well that's my thinking...

I'd say go for gold with your peanut butter on toast!!!! Eat it as much as you want because our parents did and we are fine...
