Bertocchi issues beef warning
July 10, 2010 - 10:47AM
A warning has been issued by food company Bertocchi Smallgoods to people in three states not to eat a batch of roast beef that may be contaminated.

Low levels of the potentially deadly bacteria listeria were detected in a batch of roast beef manufactured by Country Cooked Meats Pty Ltd, branded Bertocchi Roast Beef, the Melbourne company said in a statement late on Friday.

The warning applies to the roast beef product purchased between June 24 and July 8.

It affects Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania and the product has now been withdrawn from sale.

The product had been sold through supermarkets and independent delicatessens including Foodworks, IGA and Ritchies supermarkets.

Listeria is a bacteria commonly spread through food that does not usually infect humans but can cause paralysis and is especially dangerous to pregnant women and their unborn children.
