    US showed no baby?

    Hi everyone

I have just found out my little sister is pregnant with an 'oops' baby. She was on the pill and has PCOS and felt pregnant and did a pee test and it came out positive. She isn't sure when her last period was but has felt pregnant for about 2 months (really sore boobs, food tastes funny, bloating). She went to the GP who only did a [ee test, no BT and gave her a termination leaflet (yes she was shocked at being pregnant but how about giving her a pregnancy leaflet as well....).

She went for a US yesterday and the technician couldn't find a baby. She kept going on how she must not be pregnant or she is only a week along (she was a real *****). Of course my sister is really upset so I made her go get a BT and we find the results on Thursday.

SO my question is how far along does she have to be pregnant to see the baby on the scan? Also if the baby is in the tube would you still not see it on the scan? She has positive pee test for over a week.

    Thanks!

It depends, but usually after 7 weeks it is visible in an abdominal scan.
If she is less than that, they will need to do a transvaginal scan to see bubs.

If it is in her tubes, a decent technician would have looked for it. The dating scan should check the ovaries, tubes and the uterus to make sure all is well and normal.
However, if she DIDN'T have a TVS then chances are the tech would have missed the sac.

If her blood test comes back positive, she will need to go for another proper scan and find out what is going on. GL!

If the baby was in the tube they would have told her as they need to check the tubes too.

Did they say what was seen on the scan? Was there a yolk sac?
I went for my first scan thinking I was almost 7 weeks pregnant, but I was in fact 5w5d and there was no baby to be seen. I am now days away from my due date with that same baby.

I wish your sister all the best. I hope her blood tests come back with fantastic numbers. Perhaps get the Dr to request another scan for 1-2 weeks time.

    Thanks for responding!
They could see nothing there. They did a tummy scan and a internal one. But I honestly have no faith in the technician so she might of missed something. Hoping the BT gives us more info and then we can go back for a better US!

The blood test should sort things out, and then she can rebook for another scan for a later date, somewhere else

DS2 was an oops baby and an u/s (am sure it was external) picked him up at 6w2d.
Hope all is ok with your sis and she'll see her bub soon.

Some of the symptoms could have been from mid cycle so she may well be less than 6-7 weeks.
Hopefully the BT and another scan will clarify things but I'd be asking for a diff. Radiographer

    DiannaQ - hehe thanks!

Thanks everyone. She just rang and her BT showed she was between 4-6weeks so that's good. She will go and get another BT on friday to make sure everything is progressing nicely.

Great about the blood test results

A pregnancy wont show if it is ectopic, to which I would think they would have checked her tubes?

Also, I think u can tell by the lining of the uterus to whether the chance of pregnancy is high iykwim. Sounds like she got a dodgy US tech

Sounds like it MM. The tech kept going on about why did she come in and she is clearly not pregnant. She also kept bringing up MC and then had the nerve to tell my sister to stop crying as it wasn't something to get upset about! It was lucky I wasn't in the room as I would of hit her!

What?! I would be making a complaint. Far out, during my ultrasounds for my m/c's the woman wouldn't have been walking if she had said something like that to me.

    Wow your poor sister!
I would have made a complaint ,no one needs to put up with this!, she has no right to talk to anyone this way, and it sounds like she didn't even know how to do a scan properly

They should always check the tubes and overies while doing the scan as well, they thought my baby was ectopic and they checked all over ,which should be routine as far as i know.
They saw my baby at 5 weeks 6 days .

I really hope all goes well for your sister , i really hope it picks up for her ..Its great that you are being so supportive ,

Great news about the blood test results. I'd make a complaint about the tech too. When I had a missed miscarriage, the tech said she couldn't find a heartbeat, but actually consulted with my doctor before saying anything definite.

Wishing your sister luck for Friday's test.

Thats great news about the BT results.

I'd be seriously considering a complaint about the termination leaflet and about the ultrasound tech.

The way your sister has been treated is disgusting, I'd be urging her to make a complaint regarding the ultrasound and the termination leaflet too!

So glad to hear the blood test came back with good news
I wish your sister the very best for her pregnancy.
I can't believe the sonographer...how rude and insensitive!
I would complain...she needs a good kick up the b*m to remind her what a good bed side manner is.
