My very kind DH has gone and shared his cold with me... Which has turned into a full blown flu. Aching bones, thumping headache, nose running like a tap...
I know that my immune system is already pretty crappy, and am worried that after my touch of dehydration last week that I'm just going to get flogged.
What should kind of foods should I be eating to help fight this off? Everything I've read has just said to keep the calories up, but I've got no appetite at all.
I've had to explain to DH that it's not as simple as 'powering through' like I once did... But what else can I do to kick this damn lurgey?
Lemon Juice
crushed garlic
honey
boil as much as you like of each in some water until fragrant, then drink it unstrained. yes it tastes strange, but believe me it works wonders when you have the flu, garlic and honey have natural antibiotic properties and lemon with vitamin c, and the water helps to keep your fluids up.
Rest
Fluids esp juice and things with high vitamin C content
Vitamin C - maybe take a bit of Benefibre too as Vit C can block you up a bit
Panadol if you have a fever/aches
Rest
Tissues
Honey and lemon tea
Rest
Brauer's Cold Relief or other homeopathic cold remedy is an option - talk to a pharmacist first
Garlic and horseradish I think it is - again check a chemist

You get the idea.
I feel for you hun - every cold I get I pity myself because of all the wonderful drugs out there that can help, but you can't touch them. Sadly you'll just need to weather it.
I found lemsip (the standard one, not the decongestant one sadly) to be a godsend when I copped a nasty cold early on - combines the honey and lemon with paracetamol and fluids which can be easier to deal with if the idea of swallowing tablets is less than appealing.
Foodwise I'd go with anything you can stomach at this point - fresh veggies and protein would be best for bug fighting but if you're really feeling cruddy, comfort food is there for a reason. My fave was cheese toasties for some reason.
Otherwise, rest as much as you can, keep the fluids up and make DH wait on you hand and foot as penance for giving it to you in the first place.
I second, third, forth, fifth and sixth Oceans REST theory ... as well as all the other suggestions the other ladies have said.
Another thing you might want to consider just for hydration is those Hydrolite (sp?) drinks or ice blocks, just to ensure other minerals etc are not being completely depleated.
Chicken Soup. Yum! If you don't feel like making it then they sell some really yummy organic ones in the big plastic sachets in the deli section at the supermarket.
It's got liquids, veges, protein, and it's easy to eat for lunch or dinner when you have no appetite. And sometimes it helps make your nose run, which isn't fun, but it's better out than in.
I've got some freshly squeezed OJ in the fridge and I made some chicken noodle soup (with heaps of garlic and chilli - for that reason Lenny! To get it all out!!).
DH actually has some Powerades in the cupboard, so I've chucked them in the fridge too - thanks Nae!!
And yes, I'm lying in the couch under a blankie, watching crappie movies.
