Question What do you think is essential??

    Okay ladies,

DH and I were talking last night about baby and what is going to be his wardrobe eg. singlets, body suits and all the rest of it.

I was wanting to know what you ladies think is essential for babies wardrobe for his first month or so??

I was thinking of waiting till after the baby shower but think that I will get more satisfaction in buying what I think is essential and then haveing the extras that I get at the baby shower will be excellent cause there will be days where I won't have time to wash and all the rest of it.

Also for those of you that have one child already.....what do you think bubs will most likely be wearing at nights during Octoer-November???For the life of me I can't remember what the nights were like last year....

We had lots of singlets and those Bonds wondersuits. Claire didnt wear too much in her first month as it was still very warm (in march). I cant remember what Oct was like last year either? You'll probably want to dress bub in one of those suits at night anyway so theyre not cold. If you get pants, I would recommend pants with feet - because socks just fall off their tiny feet. Try to get suits that do up at the front. I found the ones that do up at the back are a bit too much effort. Get some wraps as well. Maybe also some mittens or smaller socks to put on the hands (i'd go the small socks as I found mittens just fell off straight away). Or Wondersuits have bits on the hands that you fold over and it becomes a mitten. Claire used to scratch herself up heaps so the socks on hands were good so it didnt look like we were bashing her up or something!

Because you are in QLD, is probably isn't that cold up there at that time of year, but I'm guessing the nights could still be cool? I had an October baby and it was just a bad year that it got hot by the middle of September and she hardly wore any long suits - maybe for the first 2-3 weeks at night only. If you intend on using a sleeping bag at night or wrapping baby for sleep, you wont need to use much underneath - a light jumpsuit should be fine. You can never have too many singlets though - you'd be surprised at how often they can get a little wet at the middle if the nappy leaks a bit.

I usually always work on having 3 'good' outfits for wearing out and just jumpsuits the rest of the time at home. Socks are a must too cause sometimes their little feet can feel so cold. It's a real funny time of the year cause you don't know if winter is going to drag on or if it will be an early summer kwim? My bub is due in September and I haven't brought a lot cause I just can't predict what the weather is going to be like here this year.

when jelly was little she just wore jumpsuits (the best thing invented!), either the fullbody ones in cooler temps or just the short sleeved legless ones the rest of the time (she was a january baby). I then used different thickness bunny ruggs to bunble her up in depending on the temp. I am plannin on doing the same this time. other outfits may look cute on a hanger but are a nuisance to put on at a young age and never sit correctly and are rarely actually seen because of the wraps, etc.

Personally I favoured all in one singlet bodysuits to actual singlets - it is nearly impossible to keep anything tucked in and the all in one suits prevented bub from getting a cold back.
Flynn spent the first 4 months of his life in grow suits - I would say anything else is OTT. I agree a few nice outfits are good to have, but try and make sure they are easy to get on and off - most bubs hate being dressed and fussed with (though that said Flynn was like a little doll and let me dress and and undress him to my heart's content - it is only now at age 1 that he complains!)

ETA Misty that is so right about things looking good on the hanger but not on bub - now much looks "god"when you can't hold your head up LOL!!!

What Aurora said... the all in ones are so much better than singlets and 2 pieces.
Then again, in QLD in november it can be quite hot and in the hot weather I think the gap on thier tummy helps them to stay cool.
Also IMO it's never too young to be sun smart so a hat is useful.

Both my bubs were born in October and November and I'm in Brissy so should be pretty similar conditions for your bub

The one thing both of mine lived in was short sleeve/short leg all-in-one suits. That's basically what they wore at home during the day. I had oodles of them and used them all.

Don't go too crazy with the Bonds suits just buy a few in 000 only. Don't bother with 00's because by the time bub is in 00 it will be too hot for them, day or night. I found I used them most with DS who was born early October - I used them for him for a month or so. DD was born mid-November and I used them maybe twice for her since it was way too hot by then. Those things are very warm!

Singlet tops are good too. I wouldn't take my kids out of the house in a singlet and nappy but I did have lots of cute little "dressy" singlets that they could wear on really stinking days.

Totally agree with what's been said about cute outfits too - they're a total pain to get on and off, they have to be ironed (and you'll have neither the time or the inclination to do that), and they don't look great on floppy little babies anyway. They just get all bunched up and baby looks (and probably feels) horribly uncomfortable.

Make sure you get quite a few large (120x120cm) muslin wraps, they're invaluable in the summer here because it's too hot to wrap them in anything else.

I agree with all-in-one singlets as well. On hot days my son usually just wore a nappy and maybe a singlet. Lightweight shorts/t-shirts were worn when we were going out. A rule of thumb i read when i was pregnant with No 1 was to dress baby in whatever i was wearing, plus one layer. So if i was wearing a t-shirt and skirt, he should wear a singlet, t-shirt and shorts. You can get quite lightweight babygros as well.

The only thing I could add to all those wonderfull things is that the purchasing of dressy cute clothes are the job of nanas, grandpas, auts uncles and friends.
    1 'cause they are expensive,
2 'cause it gives them something to buy for bubs,
    3. bubs will probably only wear them when you have visitors.
    4. they can wait until bubs is born and buy the right sizes ad styles for the current climate etc.
In saying that as soon as I found out I was having a little boy, I did get myself the cutest softest jeans.

If you do feel the need to buy outfits, wait until after your bubs is born, and the sales to kick in and buy things for half price for the following year, when people stop giving you presents and you have to start buying stuff.
