Ok so i founf out yesterday by poas at home and dr's and by bloods this am that i am pregnant, i have an appointment monday with the dr who did the tests - she wants to give my ultra sound refereal and mentioned booking a hospital and stuff.
I am confused at towhat happens now (this is my first) - so when do i need to pick a hospital?
when and how do i book an ob-gyn?
between now and my ultra sound what happens (do i just wait and have no further appointments until then?)
when do i start visiting midwives/antenatal classes?
Thank you for any light you can shed on these questions!!
I think you just wait. I only had one hospital to choose from so I never had those issues. I am pretty sure your Dr will let you know where you need to go and what you need to on your monday appointment
Hi ttcanxiety and a big congratulations on your BFP!
The referral for an ultrasound is probably for a dating ultrasound to work out just how far along your pregnancy is. You don't then necessarily need to see a doctor after that, but if you want to your GP can talk about the scan and results with you.
When you see your doctor tomorrow, she will talk to you (or you should ask) about your care options. Basically, you have a couple of choices if you are looking at a hospital birth - public or private.
If you choose to go private (ie a private hospital and a private obstetrician), your GP will give you a referral to an obstetrician. You need to call their office and they will work out a date for your first antenatal appointment. You then book into one of the private hospitals that the OB delivers at. Generally, you see them sometime around 10-12 weeks, although I know some wait til 13 weeks. Private OB care and private hospital stays can be v expensive, so it's really only an option if you have private health insurance that covers you for maternity.
If you choose to go public (ie a public hospital), you will see the midwives and - if necessary - an obstetrician at that hospital. When you decide on the hospital you want to go to, you ring to book in and they will set up your antenatal appointment for you. If you go public you have very few - if any - out of pocket expenses as almost everything is covered by medicare. I'm not sure at what point you attend your first antenatal appointment in the public system, but it's probably around the same time.
Up til your first appointment, if you have any worries or concerns you see your GP.
Antenatal classes are generally held later in your pregnancy (from 28 weeks on), although many hospitals/midwives clinics offer early pregnancy classes and some other education options or exercise classes.
But the short message is your GP can answer all these questions and give you the contact details for the hospital booking if you choose to go public or a referral to an obstetrician if you want to go private.
As far as I know, you will probably go for your US in a week or two to give the baby time to develop enough for a sonographer to see it.
Wouldn't hurt to make another Dr appointment after that so you can discuss your care options and which OBs there are in your area. Your GP may organise for routine bloods to be done so basically they test for HIV Hep B Hep C Rubella etc.
From reading KSP's post it sounds like states vary for this next bit.
I am a public patient and I have appointments just with my Ob. I do see a MW before each appointment and she does the blood pressure readings, urine tests for protien etc.
Some Obs opt for shared care between themselves and your GP, this is what I did for my first pregnancy.
SO you organise your Ob and make your appointment to see them usually around the 10 week mark. Then they will organise the NT scan which tests for Downs Syndrome - this is optional. It involves a blood test and another Ultra SOund. Depending on the results you may have an appointment at 16 weeks - just a check up, then the 20 week scan (this is where you can find out what bubs sex is if you want) Its a bit like a dating scan and they check bubby all over. Then its every 4 weeks with your Ob until 30 week, then every 2 weeks until 34 weeks (I think) then every week after that.
As for booking your Hossy stay, I guess that depends on where you are planning to have bubby and what their policy is.
I will be booking in at my hossy at my next Ob appointment in 4 weeks (roughly 20 weeks).
This is basically what I know for my hospital and caregivers. It will vary considerably from place to place but this is just an overview from my knowledge of what they at my place.
