This question gets asked a lot. The thing is, the cord blood is only available to be stored, if the cord is clamped immediately after birth. There is a lot of research to show that the blood is intended for the baby, and that the baby gets lots of benefits from receiving the cord blood at birth (ie late clamping, or no clamping, waiting until the cord stops pulsating). These include higher iron levels which can last up to a year, and of course the stem cells of which we are only just starting to understand the benefits, but they certainly include protection against the diseases for which the cord blood would be used if it was collected and stored.
Personally I think letting the cord stop pulsating is the best option. And it's definitely cheaper!
