Parenting after Long Term TTC #7

Thanks girls, I know you are all supportive of us and Saph I think that you are correct that she is jealous. I have said a few times how I find my BB friends so much more supportive friends as we all understand the journey's we have been on to parenthood.

Talking to DH tonight I have decided that next year I am going to take Tara to our local playgroup as it will involve less travelling for us (especially when I will be big and uncomfortable) and the kids she will meet there will be kids that she will eventually go to school with as well.

Have terrible terrible ovary pain beginning to wonder if it is more than just my pelvis today, making me feel sick. Wondering if i should call the doctor.

hi ladies just checking in! Been reading and pleased to hear all is well with everyone. That woman sounds like a right cow Kelly! Thing about mum's groups is we end up trying to be friends with people who all we have in common with is we have babies the same age. End of common interest there most times. I have culled a few of the ladies i see regularly as they started to get a bit boring or annoying. I found a big rift in our group came about when our parenting styles started to differ. I now just stick to the couple of ladies who i would enjoy talking to if we both didn't have babies. 0

As for me i am dealing with a crawling boy now. He has been crawling for about a month now but still no improvement in sleeping! He also now has one tooth with weeks of hell beforehand. So not looking forward to the next 19 teeth!

I think my bubba might be on the track for walking soon......waahhhh....why cn't he stay a little bubba forever, he is growing up way fast, crawling everywhere, standing up and surfing the furniture and yesterday he stood on his own withno assistance for the very first time....slow down Mr. C, mummie's not ready for you to grow up yet!

Thinking of Murph and Jazz and hoping yesterday was just....well words can't really describe what is must have felt like to see Jazzy hear sounds for the first time but I am sure it was awesome!!! Another one eagerly awaiting the video.....

I'm sure Murph will be back on line soon to update us all but I'm so happy that all the turmoil has been worth it and that Jazzy now gets to experience the new world of sounds.

Going to the doc today to investigate this pain feel a little like a hypocondriact (sp?) but it really hurts. lol

Good Luck Saph, I've had a ruptured ovarian cyst before (they thought it was my appendix) when it ruptured I passed out for about 3 hours. FX you can get an ultrasound to get it checked out...

i just cant imagine what it must be like to be hearing sound for the very first time omg wow :o ive being talking heaps about this with coops and just thinking the hole time what will be going through this little girls head " like wow thats my mummys voice gee that dog makes a weird noise ummm whats that noise coming from me ..oh wow thats my voice OMG im just so interested in this hole thing and murph well omg again what would she be thinking while this is all happening to her baby girl the emotions she must be going through would be amazing .so im just gonna go and have my happy cry and hope the very best for murph and jazz and daddy dh of course.stay srtong guys and know we all love you and are so very proud of you all.wow talk about an insperational family.

Doc thinks I might have a fibroid, having ultrasound tommorrow if I am still standing by then. On the upside this is so much more painful my pelvis is not bothering me at the moment.

Hello my lovelies...at long last!!! Sorry it's taken ages to respond but enough about that. Thanks Kelly for letting the girls know. the first thing I wanted to do was share but I'm sure you will understand it was a crazeeee time.

First let me say...I'm just as dying to see the vid as you guys are. I was there and I missed it lol. It was chaotic and we spent our whole time just trying to occupy our suspicious little girl who didn't want a bar of it. they gave her every toy under the sun, then mummy brought out the big guns (my purse lol ) and finally she was happy to play and distracted enough to keep the processors on. It's funny the first card she pulled out was my Medibank Private card and I say on camera, "thanks Mr Medibank". The filming was done by our audiolgist from Adelaide who came across for the switch-on. We filmed it too but haven't seen what we got yet. We are absolutely shagged!

So here goes. Yes, the operation was a success and everything points towards Jazzy being able to hear. It's not as you think though, it's not instant hearing from the moment they switched her on so bear with me and I will walk you through it.

Switch-on was amazing for us but we knew what to expect, any sign at all would be a sign that the signal was getting to her brain and being interpreted in her behavioural response. she can't tell you what she is feeling so reactions are varied from confusion and suspicion to curiosity, fear and a whole range of things. this is the first time that she has experienced noise and has no idea what it is. What she did during the tests was snuggle into me for reassurance, turn her head toward the sound being activated by the head audiologist manipulating the sound through wires to her processors. There are 22 electrodes in the cochlear implant and switch-on is just a process of turning some on, not all (or it would blow her tiny mind of course). So they start with a conservative 4 electrodes at a whisper volume and gradually across time and lots and lots of learning to listen therapy and trips to the audiologist for what's called mapPing, we get the hearing fine-tuned. There is so much to unerstand but I will try not to take your excitement away. so for now, all you need to know is that she is showing really positive responses and the medical lot saw all they needed to satisfy themselves that the operation has beena success and she is "hearing"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to go back to Melbourne a few more times over the next month and then we will be handed over to our audiolgist in Adelaide for all the follow-up work. Now the fun stuff really begins. Listening and interpreting sound is not something that comes naturally when you haven't had it since birth, which is why I have always done therapy with her using certain toys and taught her to follow conversation and ask for things using her voice even though she can't hear it. Now I have to teach her everything about her world Smithy and more than ever it will be my full time job...my voice, when she is wearing her processors, will be her world, explaining every little sound and filling in all the blanks. this is what I have been fighting for and longing for but it won't be easy. For a starter, she HATES wearing them, so apart from the testing we haven't had the external parts on her since switch-on. We want her to have good associations with wearing them, so have waited until we are back home and may try to aim for an hour a day. I have to explain to everyone that she is not this instant hearing person. she will only hear when she wears the coil and processor (looks like a hearing aid with a coil and wire that attaches on the outside to the magnet implanted in her skull). I don't want to bring down the mood but I hope you understand, we knew this was the way it would be and this to us is everything we have ever dreamed of. Now the hard work really starts and I can't wait. It's gonna be a challenge :)

More later and ask anything but we are absolutely drained, exhausted and shagged. Our weekend went like this, Dad arrived from Townsville on Friday night and he brought a mate, we all stayed up drinking and telling lies til 2 am, then spent Saturday driving all over the island setting pots in dams to catch marron (freshwater crayfish), did the tourist thing, drank more, another 2 am bedtime, followed by more touristy things and pulling in the marron pots, cooked up a great sushi feast and ate the marron. Got to bed at midnight, after packing for the trip and all left the island on Monday morning, then drove 13 hours on monday, had 3 appointments in melbourne on Tuesday, packed up the motel at 3 am, dreamfed jazzy and on the road at 4am. We got home at 8pm lastnight. See, crazeeeee:dance::dance::dance:

Oh murph, your dedication is awe inspiring and yet again you have made me into a blubbering mess. We can only send you all our love and support and know that with you as her mum Jazzy will have the most wonderful life. So pleased it went well. I cant write anymore or I it will become all mushy.lol

Here I was imagining you just switch her on and blammo - but of course that would be too much! She's on her way and you have lots of work ahead of you, but she can hear you :D

Oh Murph, I'm so happy for you all and Jazzy has the best teacher in you as you guide her through all the new experiences she will come to enjoy in the months and years ahead. I'm just so happy that you can see the results of all your turmoil over the past 12 months and look forward to the day when she not just understands the word "mummy & daddy" but can say them back to you both as well. Sending all my love and big hugs to such a brave little girl.
