Renee - thanks for asking :-) I've been doing my research on the government health sites and can only really see that if you don't get it within 2hrs then baby might have to have antibiotics when born as the antibiotics takes 2hours to pass from you to baby, so I think that's why they were saying 4hours is ideal as baby will definitely be covered when born.
I've heard getting down on all fours is good to try to get baby into anterior position. Scrub those kitchen floors!!!!!!!
Ditto. Basically, any position where you're leaning forward, so gravity is encouraging bub to turn around. Their spine is supposedly the heaviest part, so it tends to move to the bottom. If you're reclined back in a chair, the "bottom" is towards your spine. If you're leaning forward, the "bottom" is towards your belly...:

Actually, my Active Birth class was more of an "anti-intervention"/pro home-birth class. The doula who ran it was constantly talking about the "cascade of intervention" which inevitably occurs the second you cross the hospital threshold. It gave me about 3 or 4 weeks of anxiety & tearfulness. I told my OB and he was mad, saying he wished "these people" would "jump in the lake". Still, I'd like a low drugs (I won't say No drugs) birth, but who knows ... I have long-term back/pelvis issues and a biggish baby, apparently, so probably dreaming.
Renee, still plenty of time for baby to turn. Hope it's all going well and back ache reduces. Not long now!
AFM, we saw our OB and went through the birth dot-points (I am nervous about the word "plan"). Anyway, he was fine with it. We've asked for a few minutes delay before clamping the cord. Otherwise, just asked for privacy, minimal exams and monitoring and minimal attention really. But who knows how it will go. Baby is still with his/her head down low on the right, and back curving up on my left, but I have a wonky pelvis ... so I'm assuming things may not be straightforward.
Otherwise, we;'re having a bit of an issue with a neighbour's child (who is aspergers) who has to have her light on all night, but it shines into our bedroom (we have a blind, but on these hot nights, need it raise so we can get some air in). I just braved it and went over to ask if she could actually just move bedrooms, but that was a No (she's too anxious for the other rooms, because they're too distant or they have street noise). I manage to extract the very vague promise of a better blind on their side and whilst I was pretty clear that we can't sleep with the light, I still feel like I kind of lost that conversation, and that nothing will be done. This is starting to eat me up a little. I'm having so much trouble sleeping anyway with hip/buttock pain, and each time it's such a struggle to get back to sleep because of this damn light. I tried a mask (like on the plane!) but sweat started pouring down my face!! Any ideas?
WW - any chance you could use a portable air cooler/conditioner, so that you don't have to have a window mount aircon (unless of course you've got an aircon already installed in the wall), and then maybe rather than have to open your blinds you could just pop the air con on for an hour or so before you hit the sack to cool the room? Or fight fire with fire and if there is a room of yours that shines into one of their bedrooms then change to a 100Watt super mega bulb and shine the bejesus out of them!
Re "cascade of intervention", I'm pretty sure that term is used word for word on the 'mybirth' website (.au) and I think that website probably freaked me out a bit but it certainly opened up my eyes to a few things.

CK77 - I'm still fuming after reading about your OB! Thats terrible. Sounds like you'll be armed with lots of facts and a quiet determination to get things done the way you want (as much as possible) - I think labouring with the midwives as long as possible sounds like a good idea. Hope your groin has recovered after kicking the soccerball! I can hardly contemplate walking for 30min, letalone kicking a soccer ball for an hour!
Renee - I found out last week that my bub had turned posterior, after 34 weeks of behaving itself! I've been leaning forward over the back of a dining chair (ie straddling it backwards), on my hands and knees with bum in the air and wiggling hips (much to DH's amusement), and lying on my left side on the couch and in bed. My girlfriend who is a GP checked bub yesterday and it had turned back around to anterior. Don't know if my efforts helped, or if it just did it of its own accord!
WW - sorry to hear the Active Birth class was very "left field". I guess at least it shows you the other extreme, and helps you find a happy compromise for what you want to do. I too have written a birth non-plan, I called it birth "ideas"! The midwife had a chuckle. She said to highlight the really important parts (eg don't offer an epidural), so any new staff can pick up the most salient points quickly.
What a bugger of a situation with your neighbour. Have you got a fan in your room? I've got ours on all night every night now, as we can't have the blinds open due to a streetlight right outside our room.
Juniper - great news that bub has turned, and that BP is down! Hehe had to giggle about the midwife's scales, my OB's are always "fast", so I take a kg off my weight before I tell him. PLUS, they're on carpet, which I think adds more... should take off two kg next time! You are starting to race towards the finish line too! How exciting.
Mellybelly - great to hear from you! Hope all is going well, definitely hear you on the tiredness front :lol:
AFM - all is going well, apart from bub not behaving itself and turning posterior. The heat is really slowing me down, but I guess thats a good thing, been trying to fit too much in! Got 5 birthdays between now and Xmas (including DH's), then 10 people coming over for Xmas lunch. Luckily my sister is coming to stay before Xmas, so I can just boss her around from the couch and she can get everything ready :clap: Getting my bag packed for the hospital, baby's room is semi-done, birth "ideas" are on paper, so I'm feeling a bit more relaxed about the impending arrival!

oh my goodness. life just doesn't seem to ease up eh?! everytime i think i'll have time to sit and get to the nitty gritty of this forum and something crops up. Anyway have read last couple of pages and can't believe so many of you are getting so close to finishing line! that's just flippin' awesome. I'm almost 25 weeks, and still in bed at 9ish every night, still up 3 times a night and still tired. Bit concerned as to how I'm going to cope with a bambino when i'm soo tired now and by all accounts from my helpful friends, I'm getting more sleep and rest than I will when he's born. Working certainly takes its toll, but still....
Re. all these birth plans, and birth ideas.....i feel really outta my depth. I'm still reading my 'what's happening every week' in my 5 books i got given. Haven't given too much thought to birth except, I'm a bit scared, I would like to have a natural birth, unsure about the drugs. I watched Ricki Lakes' doco film 'The business of being born' 2 years ago, and it was fascinating but .... still not sure about my capabilities.
Re. the OBs my Northwest OB is Martin D'arcy Evans and he's been great. Didn't make us feel rushed in the first app.ment, was happy with all our questions and said he'd let all his ladies 'give it a go' before intervening.
For the ladies who have written Birth ideas/plans/etc where should i go to read up on pros cons of epidural, and other drug options. Also the episiotomy/tearing debate.... why are some so against getting cut? I am purely asking this as someone who hasn't got to that point of my thought process. ( Not trying to rile anyone up or anything. ) belly rubs to all, xx

AFM - I have just received by second bloods and my HCG is now 15,930 (so doubling perfectly) and progesterone is 824. So everything is looking great!! I have booked in for my scan for next Wednesday (22/12). First and foremost, we want a happy and healthy little baby - if it is two, then we will be doubly blessed!! So I'm really looking forward to seeing how many little heartbeats there are!! DH may be a little more anxious though!!
Mum-2-Be, great news! Love to hear about your scan if you have energy to write about it before Christmas. Also, re delayed clamping, I guess there's a bit on it out there, like I think maybe one of the other ladies referred to the World Health Org web site. It's about letting the baby get a bit more oxygen (and maybe iron) from the placenta, before cutting it off. There is also the balance though between that and preventing the mum losing too much blood. There is some controversy here, so I won't go further into it. We went for the "medium" (half-arsed!) approach. Some people want a physiological third stage, ie just let it happen (the placenta coming out that is) with no medical management. You know, the OB/midwives will explain it better.
Juniper, hey I missed in your post that your baby has turned - brilliant! My baby too has her/his head near my right hip. Snap.
Chrissy & Leabie, yep, thanks I'm onto it with the fan, though the cooler not so much. My mum has one, and has offered it, but she's going through menopause, so I can't take it. Might need to buy one. I think the situation seems to have improved somewhat. I have a feeling maybe the daughter is away for a bit, or maybe the blinds have been changed. Don't want to jinx it. Fingers crossed.
Also, Chrissy, I checked the mybirth web site, but just went straight off it. I've read enough about "rights" in birthing. As an ex-lawyer, it kind of activates a very unchilled-out part of my brain and I reckon it raises my stress hormones (btw I'm a big fan of rights, it's just that analytical side coming out).
Leabie, hope your baby stays in a good possie from now on. Not long. Five birthdays between now and Christmas? My God. We have 3, and I was getting stressed.
Airline, yes, know what you mean about birth plans. They are intimidating. At first, my DH and I were really militant and wanted to know everything and get it "right". And then, naturally, over time (and perhaps with increasing pregnancy hormones), just started feeling "what will be, will be". As for episiotomies, I think people are concerned that they're done unnecessarily, but also I hear the opposite, ie ... and I don't want to say this, but you know ... some injuries could be avoided with a smaller ... (I'm sensitive to words) ... "incision". I guess it's one of those things. In the end, we aren't going to know what feels right until the day.
AFM, I'm keen to finish this season of Dexter (don't know if anyone else watching). But I want to sit backwards on the chair (for baby possie) but it wrecks my hips/bum and I get pain in the night. Work is a drag! Cannot wait for Christmas.

WW - lemme know what you thought about the finale. I watched it last night before bed. Now I have to hang out until season 6. At least I'll have the next season of True Blood to tide me over until Dexter... I just read that Michael C Hall and the actress who plays Deb (can't think of her name) announced a day after the finale aired in the States that they are divorcing. I wonder what that might mean for next season.....?

Lairdoz: Snap, we are having teething issues here as well. We have DH's Xmas party on Friday night so my parents are looking after Tara in the evening for us so either she will still be awake when we get home or asleep on my mum's lap. I better make sure I show them how to give her some nurofen.

we compared the growth to when I was pregnant with DD and they are similar in size to DD at 24 weeks, so will be interesting to see what my measurements are next week at the Ob. At my last appt I was measuring a couple of weeks bigger but these guys have gone through a growth spurt so will be funny if I'm now almost 6 weeks bigger..aaahhhh

Hello all! I am so pleased to see so many people back in here and up the duff! Airline hello!! Wowser. So pleased to see you all. Wishing you all a happy and healthy pregnancy. I think I promised to write a birth note after being inspired when Lise did it as my time was nearly up, sorry it’s taken 4.5 months!!! Better late than never.....
Because I was induced due to my 412 month pregnancy, I didn’t get the birth I was hoping for – i.e. all in hospital and permanently attached to a monitor etc. I wanted to stay at home as long as possible, have hot baths and do yoga and stuff, but in the scheme of things this was all totally fine. I didn’t use half the stuff I have with me packed for the birth – after all that effort LOL, and also didn't take much notice of my birth plan that I thought I'd militantly stick to. I did use the TENS machine for all the early stages and that was really good although I didn’t get on with the gas and air at all. Think DH like that more than me! You might remember that DH wasn’t going to be there for the birth. Well, because it was a “quick and brutal” birth (midwives comment), he never left.
They couldn’t get a good reliable heartbeat from the monitor on my belly, so I ended up with a monitor up my wotsit at attached into the babies head, and she’d twisted and was spine on spine. I had been pushing for a while and working hard (and to my surprise, the best pain relief was coming from acupressure) when the midwife said that I was only having mild contractions and unlikely to give birth on her shift (due to end in about 7 hours). I’ve never been so close to punching someone. I knew I couldn’t do 7 more hours like this, so I had some pethidine which was my backstop position (as I really didn’t want an epidural). It was wonderful, fabulous stuff: I was snoring between contractions I was relaxing so much. I now know why people take opiates. Anyway, I woke up and announced that I was ready to push, I just suddenly wanted to after what I later found out was only about an hour and a half of actual labour. The midwife said I was nowhere near, but I was quite insistent apparently. I also announced that I was about to do a poo and told everyone to leave the room but was assured that I wouldn’t (and didn’t!). The midwife got a doctor and everyone in the room went quiet. He was (with the exception of my dearest husband) the most attractive man I’ve ever seen. And I’m there, legs akimbo and off my head on pethidine and I still knew it! Ha ha. Anyway, he plunged straight in, didn’t even buy me dinner :D. He was quite worried about the heartbeat and decided that I needed to give birth right away and said that I could push all I liked. DH looked a bit worried, and this was the worst bit – all of a sudden the room was full – a second doctor, a second midwife and a paediatrician in case it went wrong. I think I pushed about 12 times before the baby came out, although I got told off for making too much noise and wasting the energy when I should have been focused on getting the baby out quickly. The doc asked if he could make a small cut but I don’t remember this at all and certainly didn’t feel anything. He used a suction pump too as he was getting worried. Then all of a sudden she was out with an alarming squelch and plomped on my chest, all slippery and bloody. All I could think was that she had perfect, tiny, blue fingers and nails. Total labour 1 hour 48. :o
They finished up fiddling with my undercarriage, again I didn’t feel a thing, didn’t hurt at all. They said that my placenta was taking too long to come out and unless it came soon, I’d have to go into surgery and have an epidural to get it out. To which my response was that if I’d known I was going to have a ducking epidural, I’d have ducking well had it hours before. Luckily it popped out just in the nick of time. I had a shower and a tasteless, flavour-free sandwich and a dishwater-strength cup of tea and I think it was one of the nicest meals I’ve ever eaten. DH rang Mum, everyone cried. The baby looked as astonished as us to be out. Then there was a funny moment where I went up to the maternity ward, DH went home and I was left with the baby... but I didn’t have a clue what to do. But it was a lovely moment, just me and her and I got a chance to have a good look at her and her at me. More thoughts on home later... this is enough rambling for now! So pleased you are all getting on so well and so so so pleased to see so many of you so close to getting your babies. Mine has just tried to suck on my toes and has promptly fallen asleep (nearly an hour earlier than she normally would). Strange little adorable bundles.... xx
Second one! I read a few pages back about the whole bf/not bf, cloth nappies thing. I’m saying pretty much what other people have said, but do what suits you, and your baby. I’m very lucky in that Charlotte really only does one poo a day, so she has 6 cloth nappies, and generally wears two a day if we’re at home and after she’s done a poo. That way it’s no bother at all to wash them, but does help out a bit and saves a couple of dollars a day that I can spend on cake instead ha ha. But my friends baby poos five times a day, so not sure I’d be so keen with that. You can get enviro friendly-ish disposable ones at the Nappy Store online.
I intended to exclusively bf for six months, but had two lots of boob infections, so Charlotte has been mix-fed since 2 weeks. (mix feeding is a lovely non-judgemental term!!) She is mostly BF, but has one bottle a day which if the day is going well is BM, but if not, it’s formula. So be it. I’ve realised that you make hundreds of decisions each day when you have a baby, and if you sweat each one you’ll end up a nervous wreck ... now I put energies into deciding whether we will read Where’s That Monkey? (very good) or The Very Hungry Caterpillar first. Or maybe Blinky Bill.............
LM: great to hear from you! Sounds like the birth of Charlotte was certainly an experience but well worth it in the end :-)
I hope your neighbour stayed away long enough for you and DH to spend some alone time with the new arrival ;-)
My birth 'plan' is pretty much just 'let me give everything a decent try myself before jumping in and intervening' so we'll see how that pans out on the day....
Can't believe Charlotte is 4.5mths!!! How time flies! I bet you are relishing every minute of it :-)

Hey Renee..... OMG, WHEN will this baby come?? (and I'm not even overdue yet, just damn impatient and really keen to not be in hosp over Christmas). Glenny (ha ha, can I just say that I'm typing this post from my iPhone and it just auto corrected Glenny to 'Flabby'), anyway Glenny was 3 weeks early so I hope everything was/is okay? And provided everything is okay then yes I am bloody jealous!!!!! ;-)
I'm thinking you'll be kind of happy to go overdue tho, paid parental 1/1/2011, plus a great little bundle of joy to start off the new year with a bang! (plus no stay in hospital for Xmas). Although I'm sure right about now you're not thinking of all those things, you're probably just wanting baby NOW!
Yes i don't care about the parental leave at this point! I am so damn uncomfortable and swollen i just want this baby out! Plus to celebrate xmas with a new baby would be perfect. Who knows!!!!!

other genuis ideas other people had but i will claim as mine :shhh: - bike light for feeding - they last longer than a reading light, a notepad to write down who gave you what so you can do thankyou notes in about three months time and a big red folder to put all the hosp paperwork in so you dont lose it all in the chaos!

Well i had a strip and stretch (membrane sweep) yesterday arvo..... enjoyable ;-) I highly recommend it, it was such a relaxing procedure - NOT!
I have my fingers crossed this gets things moving before Xmas so I don't run over.

Just dropping in to say hi and to let you all know we had our 16 week growth scan today and found out the babies sexes, and we are having.....
2 BOYS
Both DH & I are still in shock as we were sure that they were going to be girls and when he told us one was a boy we were then waiting to be told the other was a girl, but no we have 2 little "pee pee's". Now the wait is on until they are born to see if they are actually identical or fraternal, because even though they have 2 placenta's if they split early then they could still be identical with 1 embryo not surviving and the other splitting. DH & I think they are not identical, but only time will tell on that one.
Now the dreaded search for boy's names start as we have no idea, girls names for us were easy but boys are so much harder and now we have to find 4....

We had a scan last week and got to see and hear the heartbeat which was so cool. I was so happy just to see it. There was also a second sac, but with nothing inside, so the doc said we have to wait till next scan to see if it is a very late starter, or just remains empty....
