It takes a bit longer than earlier ones because they do all the measurements of the baby and check the heart chambers and that sort of thing. Depending on the person who does the scan, they will either ask you if you want the gender known, or you can ask them, but I doubt that they will be able to refuse you point blank - it would only depend on the position of the baby if they can't tell you.
With my first baby I had the scan at the regional medical imaging place and the sonographer was really rude and she didn't even give me a picture of him, but my Dr gave them to me later. For the subsequent ones I had them done privately and his machine was of better quality anyway so the scans were heaps better.

You will wonder what you were worried about when you come out. If DH is going with you, get him to ask...lol...that's what I do if I'm afraid it's an answer I won't like.
