Unhappy Anyone else not putting on weight?

    Hi everyone,

I'm just a bit concerned about my weight, because i haven't put on any weight since being pregnant, and i'm now almost 17 weeks along!

I don't normally weigh myself, but since being pregnant, i thought i might start - just out of curiosity.

I've been eating A LOT! In fact, i don't really stop grazing all day long, including having my main meals of the day... and i really don't have the energy to go out and exercise, and have started having a 2 hour nanna-nap during the day, plus sleeping all night.

So, has anyone else experienced something similar and is it normal/ok? I'm not showing yet either and i guess i'm worried about my baby's birth weight and overall health

    Thanks so much everyone,
    Keira

    Hi Keira,

Wow! Look at your ticker go! Love the pic of your bub.

I would check with your ob just in case but when I was pg with Cooper I put on 300grams the whole pregnancy. I was always concerned about my weight but my ob said that I was obviously losing weight as I was putting baby weight on. This can be because bubs takes alot from you but also your metabolism is faster when pg.

    Take care

Oh phew! Thanks Lynn! Glad i'm not the only one!

That makes sense - Bubs taking what it can get and losing weight as you're putting it on...

Aaawww, you're a sweety! I am so excited about almost being 17 weeks! YAY!! And the photo in my ticker, my DP got blown up and framed for me as a suprise on Mother's Day!

While i'm here, how is your pregnancy going?! Almost 6 weeks!

Congrats on nearly being 17 weeks! I wish I was there.

Your DP is such a sweetie. What a beautiful thing to do for you on mother's day.

My pg is going ok. I just don't feel pg so I am in limbo at the moment until I have a scan at 7 weeks. It also brings up a lot of emotions about Cooper so it is going to be a very bumpy ride.

    Take care, thinking of you

    Hi Keira

I was worried about this too - I've put on 2kg at 31 weeeks. But in my case it was perfectly understandable as I used to like my big pub meals and accompanying vino. I've since cut those out so if I wasn't pregnant I'd be losing weight.

My ob is not all concerned because it's not like I'm dieting - I'm just eating healthily.

Lynn - Take each day as it comes, i am sure your beautiful boy Cooper will be watching over you, DH, and your new little miracle
Thinking of you for your ultrasound next week...

Fionas - Thanks so much, i think its just a strange feeling because you know something is growing inside you, and yet you maintain the same, or near the same weight for 9 months?!

    Hi Kiera,

dont worry too much - I put on 4kg through my whole pregnancy, and I didnt really start putting any weight on until after 20 weeks. I have a beautiful healthy girl now. I think I started to get a bit "rounder" at around 16 weeks, and I started to show around 18-19 weeks I think. With the weight thing, I saw midwives throughout my pregnancy (i didnt have an ob) and they never even weighed me or asked me about my weight at all.

Keira, I say enjoy it! Some women would love to be in your shoes! My friend, when she is pregnant, puts so much weight on... I hope i don't... i tend to easily put weight on now without being preg!

    Hey Keira,

I gained 6kg total in my PG with DD and it all went on after 34wks (i was same as book-in at 34wk weight check, then not weighed again until 39wks, had gained 5kg, hopped on scales day before DD came, had gained another 1kg). I was about 1-healthy-pregnancy (15kg) overweight before i got PG so even though i gained so little i was always a healthy pregnant weight kwim?

Don't worry about showing - at 24wks people were asking me when i'd start wearing maternity wear as i was still in my normal jeans, at 34 weeks i was MASSIVE! Well, felt it anyway, LOL.

No worries Keira. Your 20 week (? can't quite remember when they do it?) scan should set your mind at ease.

You can never really win with the showing/not showing. At 20 weeks I was barely showing and no-one had guessed (but I was a bit overweight before I got pregnant in any case so I think they thought that I'd just had my hand in the yo-yo jar too often). I waited that long to make the announcement because of a previous miscarriage and I just wanted to be low key.

At 24 weeks people couldn't believe I was 6 months pregnant and gasping at how small I was.

Now at 31 weeks everyone is falling off their chair that I've STILL got 9 weeks to go because now I look VERY pregnant, despite the minimal weight gain. I've had one friend tell me that I'm huge and that I'm having a 5kg whopper of a boy!

So don't worry too much about the scales. It's the scan that's important which I'm sure will show a very healthy bubby in there.

I think everything sounds ok too, you are eating well and looking after yourself but don't hesitate to ask at your next antenatal appointment if it is on your mind. Maybe when you start to show you will start putting on weight? But going by what others have written this may not necessarily happen either!

I gained 1kg in the first 14wks, then I started to show and put on the weight. The first kilo I attribute to my breasts changing. I went from a 12C to a 14D almost immediatley!

I have since put on 16kg in total, 1 kg a week since I started to show! So I am at the other end of the spectrum and am expecting a 25kg+ total by the time the baby arrives!

I was 50kg (usually only 45kg) when I fell pregnant, so I'm actually really enjoying my new shape and being able to walk into a store and find something that fits! I've also come to believe your body knows what it needs to do for the pregnancy and will/will not adjust accordingly. In my case, I need all the extra weight!

Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy.

i haven't really gained any weight yet either (maybe 1kg), and i have actually found that my clothes size has actually shrunk since i first fell pregnant (meaning i was a size fourteen, and am now a size twelve and even fit some tens - particularly in maternity clothing). having said that i am at the very top of my healthy weight range and although i have definitely gotten smaller in total body size my stomache has deffinately expanded, and squiggles is growing happy and healthy. because of this my midwives and ob are not concerned, although they do still measure my weight at every check in.

it does depend on what your starting weight is as to whether you should be concerned about not gaining enough weight or not. last time i was pregnant i was 25kg overweight to begin with and i was told that it would be healthy for my weight to remain static, or even to loose a few kilos - i gained ten kilos then (all of it KFC and chocolate).

it sounds like you are travelling along healthily and given the responses in this post it just shows how we are all different! personally at 25 wks I have just weighed myself and I have put on 4.5 kgs. My OB doesnt weigh me though (except at first visit) as she says everyone is diff and as long as baby is growing and i am feeling healthy all is fine. so i would not worry as long as you are not suffering and baby is growing well. I think it is great that everyone's body reacts in a way that is right for them and their baby. GOOD LUCK!

    Hi Keira,

    Fancy seeing you here....!

I too was a little concerned... I had been trying to lose weight before I fell pregnant and wasn't able to shed a kilo, and I have been losing about between 1 - 3 kilos each month since falling pregnant... I am eating right (which i probably wasn't too strict on before)and I do little bouts of exercise but nothing too dramatic. The Dr says it's nothing to be concerned about and that because I am eating healthier, it's completely ok to lose weight.

The pants are tighter though... And I had to jump into a pair of maternity pants today It could be worse... I put on 40 kilos with DD!!!

If you're still unsure, check with the Dr...

    Have a great day!

I put on quite a bit in the first 10 weeks (5 kg or so) - mostly in my butt, bb & hips - so none of my pre-pregnancy pants fit!! But since then, I haven't put on anything (which I was a little concerned about - but I'm reassured looking through others' experiences!)

    Hi keira_25,

I am currently 32 wks and have only put on approx 4kgs so far and I only noticed that my weight had changed at around 26 wks.

I have also been told (I assume it is true) that how much weight you gain during pregnancy depends on how much extra you were carrying beforehand?! (Providing you aren't eating lots of junk!! Not that you are though!!) So if you were carrying a bit extra beforehand you won't put on as much throughout your pg. (Please correct me if I am wrong though!! Like I said.. I was told that info.. can't remember who told me though!)

Congratulations and good luck with your pg

Thanks for all you replies girls

I feel a bit more normal now!! I did a little test last night after dinner, and i was a whole kilo heavier!! And then this morning i am back to 55kg again! So i guess i will take it as a good sign that bubs is "eating" and growing! Yay!

Amanda - are you following me?! LOL

I'm 24 weeks and haven't put on any weight but definitely have a baby bump. I've been eating reasonably healthy and I've found that I can't eat very big meals so I think its like what Lynn said about "losing weight as I was putting baby weight on".
