Bassinets

Hi all,
I am debating what type of bassinet to buy, plastic kind or wooden kind. Baby will be upstairs with me until I feel comfortable enough for it to go downstairs in its room. (our main bedroom is upstairs no other bedrooms) so I will be needing a bassinet. I know they don't last long but its better then nothing. I am also concerned about the thickness of the mattress... any suggestions?

We had a wooden cradle for DDs 1 and 2 for the same reason as you, except our bedroom was downstairs and theirs up. We went with a cradle over a bassinet because they are quite substantially bigger, so your bub can stay in them a lot longer. This time I have a hammock for bub - in a single storey house now, but I still will want her close to me for the first few months.

We had a wooden style cradle as well and both babies were in it for about 6 months until they grew out of it.

I had a cradle that I used for 3 mths with DD - DS hated it and we used an Amby hammock for 9 mths which we LOVED. What are you worried about with regards to the mattress?

We had a cradle for DD1 but our Amby hammock this time around is heaps better! Baby can stay in it for up to two years apparently, but we'd be happy with one. Cradle lasted our small DD1 for 8 mths.

I bought a Boori cradle for this one. It is substantially larger than a frilly cradle (I have long kids so this was important). It has breathable mesh sides and wheels like a standard bassinet. It doesn't rock but the bed bit is suspended so does move.

One of our best baby investments was the Bamboo Cradle by Seed Organic, they make a bassinet and Moses basket as well. Stunning quality its done our 2 DDs and been loaned at twice and still looks new, Its a great size, has a natural latex mattress which i love.

thanks all for your replies. I am looking at the boori matilda cradle, seems that will last much longer then a bassinet. And the mattress you buy is better and thicker then the flimsy foam ones you get in a bassinet. Looks stronger too. I have looked at hamocks but not sure if I like that idea, sounds good and reviews seem good but the cons have outweighed the pros on some... Also if the baby hangs low I am concerened my doggies might wake the baby up because of course it will be more their eye level hanging so low.
I will go have a look on the weekend and decide

We got a Mother's Choice Coco Delux. It lasted DD ages and I love it.

We borrowed a pram bassinet for DD1. She outgrew it by 9 weeks so we had to move her into her cot.

For DD2, we bought a Boori Newport bassinet. It's really big and stunning . I think well get several months out of it.

The Matilda is the cradle I had and it was fantastic - lasted for months and months and is absolutely beautiful. Loved being able to move it around to wherever I was, could throw a hand out of bed at night to give her a gentle rock etc. I also got a great price for it when I sold it so, in my humble opinion :-) I think you're making a great choice!
