Higher back pain, on sides near my ribs

Just wondering if this is normal?
I have had not only BAD lower back pain, which is all normal due to the growing baby at the front..., but i have been getting bad side back pain...its sort of higher up on the sides of my back near my rib cage/under my chicken wing bones.

It hurts to sleep on my side, cause it puts a lot of pressure on it, and its so unbearable...very unconfortable that it makes me feel nautious.

I find it hard to walk, or even stand at the clothes line, as its aching, and to stretch and twist feels good, however it stirs it up. I have tried panadol, but unfortunately, it gives no relief.

Is higher 'side back pain' normal? How can i relieve it and what is causing it?

    thanks ladies for your help

I had that exact same pain on my left upper back around 30 weeks. It lasted about 1 week and then disappeared. I found it was aggravated if I slept or napped on a soft surface (i.e. our soft couch) and lay on the sore side in bed. It is horrible because it hurts so much, even when you walk. I would try a heat pack if I was you and try sleeping / sitting in a different position than you have been the last couple of days. I hope that yours, like mine, if short-lived. Take care x

thankyou, so glad to hear its normal
Yes its very painful to even walk or sit in a chair.
I also get it worse in my left side, however sleeping, sitting, walking or twisting can cause it to get worse and worse...its impossible to relieve. Laying on my back is the best way to sleep, but then i get aches in my lower back and legs from bubs weight on my abdomen

Why not try a massage to see if it helps relieve the pain? There are heaps of physios who can do massage and stretching when you are pregnant, and I'm sure it would at least just feel wonderful while you are there!

I've found a pillow under my knees works wonders when I want to sleep on my back - seems to flatten out the arch under my lower back and give me better support.
