how often can they tell the sex of your baby at the 18-20 u/s?

Does anyone know how often they can tell the sex of the baby at the 18-20 week u/s? And does anyone else know how often they get it wrong? As this is wll be my first baby we need to buy EVERYTHING & I'd love to get a head start in the sales that are on right now but I don't want to start shopping if I don't know what we are having.

Also, when is normal to have the 18/20 week u/s? I always thought it was at 18 weeks but a lot of girls on heere talk about 20 week u/s

It depends on alot of things - the position of the baby as Emma said and also the "policy" of the place doing the scan.
Some public hospitals won't tell you even if they can see. Also some of the xray/ultrasound places will not give you a definite answer. They'll say "80% chance" even if they can see.

Private clinics on the other hand are generally pretty good. The place I have had all my scans is a specialist fetal medicine place and they have no qualms telling you what the sex is with an honest assesment of how sure they are about it. With this baby and with my daughter I was told they were absolutely positive and since I could also see it for myself I had no problem with that.
But my friend who went to an xray/u/s clinic was told "yeah we're 80% sure it's a boy" even though she could clearly see his bits on the screen (and yes he was a boy).

I had my scan at 19weeks and they couldn't tell us the sex as bub was laying breech with its bum firmly planted down in my groin! With Gemma they told us the sex at our scan and said they were 80% sure it was a girl.

Yep like the others said it depends on the baby on the day. I told my sonographer before the scan that we wanted to find out the sex and she said she will try but it depends whether bubs is in the right position. Lucky for us he was and did a nice big leg spread and lets just say, its definately a boy!! I know some people who have had scans and bubs was lying the wrong way, they told them to go for a walk and come back and theyll try again.
I had mine at 18 weeks 6 days because my 19 week mark was around Good Friday and they were booked out during school holidays.

In this day and age it is rare that they will tell you unless they are totally sure, as they run the risk of being sued. We had three scans and they all said "think it's a girl but can't be 100% sure", decided they said this to protect themselves, however they wouldn't have said it if they weren't pretty sure. Then everyone who had had a boy said "you would know for sure if it was a boy!!" Apparently it's pretty obvious!!
    good luck xo

We found out at 20wks and they told us we were having a girl. So you can imagine our suprise when it came out a BOY!!! Next time we wont bother finding out. I would just buy neutral stuff so that you can use it again for the next baby anyway!

yes, depends on baby's position - which can change every moment! If you tell them at the start then, yes, they should look out for it....

When I was having my daughter, I really wanted to know the sex...my heart was beating fast, as we'd been waiting half the pregnancy to find out...and then, at the end of the scan, when the sonographer had a look, she said "sorry, baby isn't showing us"...I said "can I get up and walk a bit or jump a bit or something (as they'd suggested this when i was having a scan w/ my first pregnancy) and she said "no, sorry, i don't have time"....so, she obviously didn't have children!! It may have been just another moment in her day, but it was the moment I thought we'd be naming our baby. Luckily, I ended up having another scan at 26 weeks,as I was measuring bigger for dates, and our little daughter introduced herself! I immediately went shopping!!

it sounds like you can start shopping right away then if hes a boy? I guess if it's there to see, it's there to see!

I didn't find out the first two times but my instincts ended up being right anyway. This time I want to find out the sex but on the form for my ultrasound it says it is not the policy of the hospital to use ultrasound to determine sex so I don't know what my chances are. If we do find out I won't be rushing out to buy gender based stuff just in case. Besides I don't really need anything, having clothes for both sexes anyway and all born in the same season! And I won't be naming the baby until he/she is born either.

with this bub i was booked in to get a scan, i rang them just to check if they let you know, luckily for me the receptionist told me they will definatly not tell you what you are having as its against there policy, so i went elsewhere, they didnt give me a 100% it a girl answerbut it was pretty clear, she just said looks like a girl but we cant be 100%.

with all my other kids the first 2 i never found out, the next two they told me they were boys......and they were with the next one they thought she was a girl, but said its not definate so dont go out and buy all the pink things, she was a girl.......but i have always got the " we cant be 100% sure" so they can cover there backsides i suppose.

Do you have any places where you can get a 4D scan done. I,m having one when I,m 18+ weeks and they would def. be able to tell you the sex because it's 4D.

DW had a 4D scan at 26 weeks, and we were told we wer having a girl. They even pointed out the 3 lines blah blah blah. 14 weeks later, out came a boy.

We had ours done at a place called Fetal Fotos at Henly Beach (in Adelaide)

    Hi,

We went into our 18 to 20 wk scan with our 2nd child saying "We dont want to know what it is" within 5 mins we ALL went "Oh, well theres no mistaking what he is, is there" our son was sitting there in all his glory VERY obvious indeed.

Our 3rd child we were told was a girl and she definately is.

Our 4th we asked but not only did she cross her legs but she made sure the umbilical cord was between them first so there was no seeing around it.

This baby i have been having weekly scans and they could tell at 17 wks what it is, i still ask every time i have another just to be sure though but its obvious to me what it is anyway

This baby i had my scan at 19 wks but i know in previous years i have had them at 17/18wks, apparently you have them later now because they have brought in the 12 wk nuchal fold scan and also that extra week or 2 makes it heaps easier to see everything.

My friend was told by the sonographer she was having a little boy. She bought heaps of boy stuff, and then had a girl.
