Question What baby clothes to buy and how many

    Hi girls,

Has anyone started thinking about buying bub clothes in preparation yet?
I just went into Cotton on Kids, and they were having a sale. I freaked out cos there are so many different bub first essentials and I have no idea what to buy.

Bub's due end of Feb so end of summer, early autumn.

What should the essentials for new bub be, and how many pieces?
    Please help!! Thanks!

    hey prama.
hmmmm wat ever u do get just dont get too much. when my nephew was born he was in 000 for like a week. now he is just 4months old and is in a 0. i got alot of bulk clothes off ebay (really cheap) so if they dont fit i dont have to worry. i am sorry this prob hasnt helped. I am lucky because my bubs will be due a week after my nephew was born so i roughly know wat he was wearing but just not sizes.

Our DS was due end of Feb but arrived 12 March and I found the most essential things for him were the Bonds gro-suits. He was a vomiter so he had about 7 or 8 as he would often need 2 or 3 changes a day. He was a littley too (6lb11) so the 0000 were even a little big. Lots of wraps and singlets too as the vomit and lovely explosive breast milk poos would often end up escaping!

One thing we learnt was don't buy anything that does up at the back no matter how cute it is, it's just too much hassle. The press studs between the lags are best and keep in mind your newborn will be sleeping lots so go for comfort. Those jeans might look adorable on the rack but bubs needs to be snuggled and comfy enough to sleep.

I would get basics in a 0000 and 000 - a couple of singlets, jumpsuits etc. You will get HEAPS of presents of clothes and the shops all sell baby clothes - even Coles and Safeway. I found MAckenzie was in 0000 at the hospital and for a couple of days but already she has grown out of them. It also depends on the brand. I would still get a few essentials so you feel prepared - I'm glad I did even if she wore them for only a week!

Hi Prama, I think for the first few months the main thing is singlets & sleep suits. I mainly got 000 as my DH already had one DD from previous marrieage & she was big when she was born (DH is 6' 4 1/2" tall) so I pressumed we would have a big baby. Once I got to the end of my pregnancy & my belly was still very small I went out & got a couple of the 0000 sized jumpsuits, I'm glad I did!

My DD was 8lb 13oz so she was pretty big but this doesnt mean she went straight to size 000... I ended up having to go shopping on my way home from hospital to get size 00000!

So I guess what I'm trying to make a point of is not to buy too much at once, not to pressume the baby will be big or small depending on your bump... they can surprise you! & to start off with you will mainly want the essentials (singlets, sleepsuits, some small towels for over your shoulder when burping etc)

Keep in mind that you will probably be given HEAPS of cute little clothes from family & friends.

I hope I havent rambled too much...

    Good luck

I would buy mainly simple jumpsuits as you get so much stuff as gifts. Plus, in Sydney the nights can start to feel cool at the end of Feb, so having a few long jumpsuits would be very handy incase you get a cold snap. Bonds wondersuits would have to be the best value for money item too. If the weather stays hot into March, you really wont need to dress bubs in much at all - just a lightweight jumpsuit should be enough. For Alister, being due at the start of spring I only brought a handful of winter things to get through these first few weeks in a 000 - at that time of year if you buy too many 0000 you wnt get the wear out of them as they move to 000 pretty quick unless they are a really small bub. I have brought some summer stuff in 000, but mostly in 00 as by the time it gets really hot, he will be in them, so in theory the same would work for you, only you'll need warmer stuff kwim?

Our bub was born beginning of march. It was still pretty warm..
and for NEWBORN clothes, we basically had:
*about 5 singlets in 000 size(she still wears the same ones now!)
*2 pairs of pants in 0000 size
    *2 all-in-one suits 00000 size
    *1 t shirt suit in 00000 size
    *2 all-in-one suits 0000 size
    * a few bonds suits. I think they were 000 size.
    *1 cardi in 00000 size

She was 2.9kg and 48cm long and was in 00000 for about 2 months. I would probably buy 0000 and 000 though. Just some simple things. People will give you stuff so dont bother getting to much!

I dont think I actually bought any of the stuff above. It was all given to me on the days after her birth!

You'll get heaps from family and friends for your baby shower, and I found that ppl still give you presents, mainly clothing after bub is born. I, personally, only bought 2 all in one suits, like wondersuits, and socks. What about hand-me-downs? Will you get much of them. I've got heaps from my sisters boy... Jensen was in 0000 for a lil bit, mainly 000, but the size varies, depends on the brand.

    I have about:

    8 bunny suits 0000
    8 bunny suits 000
    7 singlets 000
    5 pants 000
15 short sleeve legless suits 000 (my partner and I were both born with VERY long legs and it's coming into summer)
    5 two piece outfits 000

And a bunch of odds and ends that range from size 0000-1. We got two garbage bags full of second hand clothes size 00-2 that we've picked what we liked, washed in detol, water, and amolin to make sure they are clean as they don't stay little for long BUT you need to change them often!

I have been buying stuff from major department stores like Target which you have no problems returning with a docket. I am waiting to buy most stuff at the end jan / earily feb coz thats when they start to get rid off summers stock. You can get some real bargins then.

I have been buying 000 for hospital. I would rather be too big than small, and if it shrinks you wont stress as much.

The op shops are good, most 0000& 000 look like new. Then it wouldnt cost you much to cover all sizes

    I hope this helps

thanks so much everyone, I really appreciate it!
Thats a good idea to wait for summer sales.
And my mum SMS-ed last night to say she went and bought a couple baby singlets and t-shirts each. She had to stop herself from buying more. LOL. I think I shouldnt have worried!

I have completely no idea about what baby clothes are necessary & even the sizes confuse me! But my lovely mother in law & I spread out all the baby clothes I have been given so far on the kitchen table today to figure out if I still needed anything... It was pretty funny as I think my mother in law FINALLY understands that she doesn't need to buy me anything else! I have been sooo lucky. The only clothes I have purchased (well, my husband actually got them)- was an Adelaide Crows sweater & and singlet : )

I'd be going for Bonds suits for night time (not sure about Sydney but in Brisbane it's still quite warm during the day until late March - early April).
And all-in one suits for the daytime - get a mix of short sleeve/short leg and long sleeve/short leg.
I'd just buy what you can get away with in 0000 and 000 because you'll probably need warmer stuff for winter. By then bub will probably be in 000 mainly.

I think a good rule though is to buy about half of what you think you'll need. I bought way too much - both times - and I've got baby clothes stashed away that have never been worn!

Yeah, i think i have bought too much, but me and DF were both tiny tiny babies so i 'hope' / half expect jellybean to be in 000's for a while. I've bought a lot of summer suits so far, thinking that as it gets colder we can just pop in him some pants as well, and im expecting a couple of 'winter' suits or 'wondersuits' for sleeping and as it gets colder. I've got five or six 0000's but i figure, they grow so quickly, if we need more of the small sizes we can do a shop on the way home from hospital!!!
I figure even if i have too much, when we have another bubs, we won;t need to buy too much. Even if it's a girl most of the outfits we have are 'unisex' enough that she'd have all the basics at least until six months! =)

im buying heaps of the singlet top looking suits that snap between the legs, and ones with short sleeves too, but not plain ones, ones with patterns and pics on the front & different colors ect, so they are still cheap, and comfy for bub, but they are cute as too!
and yer i think buy a combination of 0000 and 000... if bubs is any smaller, 0000's shouldnt be too big and if they are, get someone to go buy a few 00000 stuff!
and buying 2nd hand stuff is great too, you can get so much 4 so cheap, hardly worn as babys grow so quick, and if they dont fit, you havent wasted a fortune!!

Keep in mind that shopping with a newborn can be fun so keep some room to buy....

I am finding it a little hard this time as i gave every baby item away about a year ago so its buying from scratch again for me and it's hard to know what the weather is going to be like then so i have lots of singlets, bondsuits etc.

So hard not to just buy everything.
