Pariet - safe to take?

I've seen my gp today and she has prescribed me Pariet for my heartburn/reflux that is just killing me at the moment.

She told me that it was the safest thing to take but then read me something off her computer which basically said it hadn't been properly tested for pregnancy but there were no reports to show anything harmful would happen to the baby.

After having a quick look online it seems like the treatment of choice for reflux during pregnancy but I was just hoping someone knows something more about it - I guess I just need some reassurance before I start taking it.

I am looking forward to a full nights sleep without any heartburn so much!!

I took it my whole pg with DD1 and she is fine. I am also on it now.

I was prescribed Pariet during my first pg for very bad heartburn/acid/morning sickness, but during my second pg I asked for it, and the Ob (at a different hospital from my first pg) looked at me with shock, and said that Pariet should not be taken when pregnant, and so no, she would not prescribe me any!

So maybe get a second opinion?

I would have just taken it if she'd given me the script and said it was ok - its just the thing she read to me didn't sound certain at all which made me second guess it. I'm not even sure what it was she was reading from.

Pariet is not in the "do not take while pregnant" class. It is in the class of drugs in which there has not been a wide study done on many pregnant women, but for which you can take if the benefit outweighs the risk.

I do hope we don't frighten people into thinking it's a black list drug when it is really just a not-widely-tested-on-pregnant-women drug.

I completely agree - I'm not trying to stop anyone taking it. I've decided that it's something I'm probably going to have to take because the reflux is causing me major issues at the moment - but I'm going to have a chat with the chemist about it before I do. If they reassure me then I'm happy to take it.

Unfortunately there seem to be heaps of drugs in that category of things that have been taken by many pregnant women with no major ill effects but not properly studied. I don't think there's much incentive for drug companies to bother funding research in pregnant women because it would be so hard to recruit people. They all just end up with a 'avoid it if you can but if you really need it then it's probably ok to take, we just won't give you any guarantees' sort of message.

Is it really in the do not take while pregnant category? I took it with both my boys and they told me it was what was recommended for severe reflux on pregnancy. 'sigh' so much conflicting information.

I think we all just do the best we can.

First pregnancy, I took it because it was recommended and it helped, and I didn't have any ill effects that I'm aware of.

Second pregnancy, I didn't take it because I was told not to.

No judgment on others who choose differently - we all decide what we think is best, based on our knowledge, understanding, perspective, feelings, and advice received.

Thanks for putting that info in here Maruschke, that is pretty much what the GP read to me.

Mumof2boys - it isn't in the 'do not take while pregnant' category but it hasn't been tested officially on pregnant women.

I spoke to the chemist today and he said that it's a very common prescription throughout pregnancy and he was confident enough in it that his wife had taken it during her pregnancy. He also said it will probably never be officially tested because its already used so much.

He advised that I should take it everyday of a week to settle everything down and then only as needed after that. So I've taken my first dose tonight - I'm feeling satisfied that I'm doing the right thing.
