    Reflux/heartburn

How many of you have had it it pregnancy?
    when did it start?

Ive had it since 20wks this time and its just kicked up a notch, seen my ob today and got a script for zantac, hoping it helps
last night it woke me from a deep sleep and scared the crap out of me, i was choking and gasping for air, and it hurts so much.

had it a little with ds1
    had it worse with ds2
i rekon its worse again (and sooner) with ds3

did you find your baby also had reflux?
both my boys had it, ds1 much worse than ds2, i sure hope this bub doesnt have it, wouldnt wish anyone to have it esp a helpless baby

Oh Nic , reflux is the worst . I have suffered a lifetime of it and it was particularly bad when pg with DD. Luckily she didn't have it too. I hope it eases up for you know you have some medication. Make sure you prop yourself up a bit in bed and stay away from tomato based and spicy foods .

I've had it since very early this pregnancy. Went away for a bit while bub was transverse, but I could tell straight away when it went head down lol.

DS was probably my worst, but he didn't have reflux. DD did and time will tell with this one.

Hope it improves with the zantac

I had it from about 16 weeks with DD. I could ease it with fruit tingles to begin with but by the end I couldn't eat anything without that hideous burn.

DD had reflux when she was born, but only if I ate garlic or onion. As soon as I took that out of my diet, she was fine.

I've had touches of it already, nothing much though - just more of a hint and me going "please don't let it be what I think it is"

yes i must remember to take onions out of things i think, it sucks cause i normally like spicy things and some acidy things, like cucumber soaked in brown vinegar......wont be going near that though! it seems to be coming quiet randomnly, not just at night, any time of the day really, so anyway i will get the zantac tomorrow and see how it goes with that.
Ive already gotta take another round of AB, my pg & bf tablets, fefol for low iron, now zantac, feeling like a bit of a chemist atm

Kim : I didn't know that, why does their head down make a difference, do you think ? At my last scan both babies where head down , that explains the discusting reflux .

Nickers : your so right, I think that too, I have more of an understanding of what a helpless bub might go Turku with reflux.

Why do babies get it, if they dont have spicy food ?

    yup, it certainly sux ...

I get it from all sorts of things, particularly chocolate and anything oily ...

just in case it's anything new or of use to you, this is what I posted in a similar thread:

I had a lot of heartburn last pg, and this pg it's been there too, but not as bad ... so I sympathise! there is only so much acid you can throw up before it turns you into Ms Crankypants ...

    ok, so my tips:

    1. lie ONLY on your left hand side. the way your stomach and oesophagus fit together, to keep the top of your stomach bag lower than the opening of your oesophagus, you need to lie on your left side. On your back, tummy or right side, if there's lots of acid/food, it bathes the bottom of your oesophagus and is much more likely to burn or come back up.

    2. milk. lots of milk during the day. and I mean lots.

    3. find a good balance of zantac and mylanta. on my Dr's advice, I just ended up having one zantac morning and night every day for most of my pg ... and then when it was particularly bad, mylanta on top of it. see what your Dr says.

    4. if zantac isn't enough, ask your Dr about Periot (sp??) it's this medicine they can prescribe which makes your stomach produce less acid, and so there's less heartburn. your Dr will assumedly be able to tell you if it's something which can help you. they prescribed that for me quite a ways towards the end of my pg, and it helped.

    5. avoid any standard triggers ... anything fatty, anything acidic, anything spicy, bulb things (onion, garlic, etc) ... anything else you've noticed might set you off. if you're not sure, I strongly recommend keeping an absolutely exhaustive food diary, with space for you to write down times and foods and drinks, and with a column on the side for you to write in when you've had heartburn, with a rating out of 10 ... that way, you can go over it every few days, and see if there's any triggers you haven't been aware of.

    6. people always say plenty of water, but I actually found that clear fluids could make my heartburn worse - I don't know why ... but obviously, if water/broth/etc upset you, find other things which you can keep hydrated with, which don't upset you! for me, it was just more milk ... but as long as you know what fluids you can flush your system out with to keep everything running properly without exaccerbating the reflux, go for gold ...

big hugs, and good luck ...

Yes, I got it so bad I had to take Pariet to town down my stomach acid. It's a proton pump inhibitor. I had it so bad I barely slept for a week and had to remain upright at all times. So so so so bad, zantac didn't make it any better. You have my sympathies

Another sufferer here but not as bad as you by the sound of things. I had with DS and got it very early on again this time - probably about 14 weeks or so. It has been progressively getting worse and worse. I pretty much have it all the time, but no reflux, thankfully. I do find the Quickeze chews help, but it doesn't matter what I eat - even a peice of toast will give it to me.

    Here's hoping the zantac helps

Ive had it with all 7 of mine, some worse than others. #2 it was bad but i just struggled through. #5 it was bad but zantac worked a treat. #6 it was BADDDDDDDDDDDDDD, it came on at 20 wks and i struggled through with zantac not working well and sleeping upright till 29 wks when i had a severe reflux attack and kept vomitting blood. 4 days in hospital, 2 spent in the special care unit, 1 blood transfusion, 1 iron infusion and taking both zantac and losec later i was ok till baby was born. #7 i got put on losec at the first hint of heartburn/reflux at about 20 wks, 35 wks another blood vomitting episode and hospital stay saw my losec increased until baby was born.

5 of my 7 have had reflux, #7 had bad reflux that saw him on losec himself.

Try to pinpoint the foods that trigger it and avoid them, sleep propped up and dont go to bed on a full stomach or having just drunk alot of water, these should help ease your symptoms somewhat and if the zantac isnt working ask for losec.

i don't remember really having with with DS at all but have been getting it the last couple of weeks this time round. ugh. not as badly as you are though & so far i've just been eating the quickese chews but i think i'm going to have to get some mylanta or something soon.

i can't seem to work out any particular foods that trigger it. it's weird.

hope the zantac brings you some relief
